acer aspire 8935g 64bit laptop running hot under puppy

#1 Post by ally »

hey puppy lovers

I am trying to convince my son to convert to puppy having become windows free for about a year

he runs an acer aspire 8935g 64bit laptop running win 7 64, when I have tried to run both 32bit and 64 bit puppies the temperature runs to critical and shuts down

I remember reading somewhere about a required command for new kernel versions but have been unable to find it again

number 1 son is started to get fed up with windows so I need help getting him to make the change

puppy will only run for about 5 minutes before it crashes

any thoughts greatly appreciated

cheers

ally :)

You could do some research on the particular CPU to determine if cpufreq scaling is available for it. If it is, then the CPU could possibly be throttled, hopefully cooling it down.

Or...see if your Puppy version has this built-in package:
Menu / System / CPU Frequency Scaling Tool

If none of this works, try Puppy Linux 4.1.2.
It's a bit older, but supposedly runs pretty cool.

thanks both

I have tried several flavours of puppy without success

I have also tried the frequency scaling again without a positive result

it's infuriating as I can can picture the thread I read about the problem but cannot remember enough of it to search......gggrrrr

I haven't tried the 'precise' build yet with it's newer kernel so may try that when I next visit my puppy

cheers

Or... See if cpufreq is supported by the combination of processor, bios and Puppy Linux version.

BTW further information about Puppy Linux on the Aspire one at these links

Solved

well I'm embarrassed to report that the fix was a bios change

this particular machine has switchable graphics which just needed switching off!

have tried fatdog64 and slacko to date, fatdog ran hot still (but not enough to shutdown) so using my old favourite slacko 5.3.3

:)
