Ok. First, here's the background. My mother had the SR1320NX. It's FSB heatsink came off (bracket pin that the lock bar connected to came unsoldered) and she ran it until it overheated and the capacitors all popped. I think it may have gotten hit by lightening, too, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I was given the SR1703WM for fixing another computer. These are basically the same PC, only the older 1320 had all the bells and whistles (SD Card reader, front audio, front USB/Firewire, DVD-RW) while the 1703 didn't. SO, since all those lovely peripherals were compatible, I hooked them all up to the 1703. Here's the problem I'm now having. (This is in both Windows, and Puppy, by the way, with and without peripherals.)

When under normal operating conditions, (like me writing this right now), the fan on the heatsink is at full steam ahead, running full speed, with basically NO load whatsoever on the CPU. I've also noticed that in the BIOS, the Thermal Monitoring shows it running at 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which I know is a load of bologna. I've checked for a BIOS update, and there's not one that I can find. I'm running the most current one available, from what I can tell.

Questions to ponder:
1) What's causing the fan issue?

2) Is there a way to bypass the thermal monitoring in the BIOS without flashing a custom BIOS?

3) If not for 2, suggestions for a BIOS replacement? Possibly from another model from Compaq that was similarly equipped, like the 1320?

Just changing peripherals should not be affecting that. Are you sure

Anyway, I was given the SR1703WM for fixing another computer.

That the unit cpu fan was ok before giving it to you before you made the changes?
Sounds like temp sensors are screwed to me from you saying

Monitoring shows it running at 20 degrees Fahrenheit

which would also make the cpu fan go crazy. I am out of my league though here so take my post with a grain of salt.

Actually, I received the computer as Windows had crashed and the person who had it had gotten it from work as a freebie so they were willing to part with it in exchange for me updating another computer from Vista to 7. Took no time to get the thing running puppy.

I agree with your assumption on the temp sensors. Though, I've got no way to realistically check that. I do have another heatsink and fan, but I doubt that's going to be the issue. Since the computer runs fine as is, I think I'll just ignore the loud for now and enjoy having the free PC. I'm going to be putting Windows on the second hard drive since I have to have it for some things in school, but other than that, it's going to be a Puppy box.

I run inxi in all my Puppy installs. To get it working like I want in MacPup 529 I installed some sensor applications. I posted about it here. I don't know if those sensor applications I used will be of any good to you or even work in SlackO

Emachine 3507 that I run as a media center in my motorcycle shop.
