Version 1.1.24 is out.
The gstreamer libs package on the downloads page is just an empty file at the moment. Maybe they are updating that.

Anyway I downloaded the Debian Wheezy gstreamer libs and included them and have packaged SlimBoat as a .PET which seems to work in Dpup Wheezy. Haven't tried other Puppies yet (though I know it won't work in Racy).

Flash Player is working (in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins).

With datafilehost you want the smaller "download" button.
The larger "download now" thing is an ad.

SlimBoat 1.1.24 Wheezy .pet

Nicely done, OscarTalks. Installed your pet, using Slimboat as I type, on Precise 5.4.3. I was looking for a lightweight alternative to Seamonkey as I'm running on only 256MB of ram.

Youtube works but with frequent stuttering of both video and audio. Using Htop to check the usage shows regular spikes to 100%.

However, using Seamonkey to view the same video yielded a smoother experience, with only occasional lags in video, none for audio.

Strangely when using SlimBoat, the Murga Linux forum is displayed in rather small font size but when I click on a thread, individual posts have the usual (acceptable) font size.

Hello zenn,

Thanks for testing and reporting. Tried a few YouTube videos here in Wheezy and seems all OK. If RAM is low I hope you have some swap. I think fonts can be changed in preferences but it is a new browser for me so only just started looking myself.

Anyway I have made another version using the official Ubuntu Precise gstreamer libs so this one may work better in Precise Puppy.

With datafilehost use the smaller "download" button.
The larger "download now" thing is an ad.

SlimBoat 1.1.24 Precise .pet

Slimboat Comment...

#49 Post by slavvo67 »

I'm using UpUp Precise and Slimboat certainly lightened the load a little. Works very good except not so good with Youtube streaming video. One other comment, the Google Search link uses a customized Google Search and not the direct Google.com. Not an issue if you don't use it but it worries me that there may be some other monitoring going on behind the scenes.

That said... I like it. Nice, lightweight, clean and almost as fast as Dillo. THIS IS DEFINITELY WORTH A LOOK AS A DEFAULT BROWSER FOR DISTRO MAKERS!

It looks like they have fixed the gstreamer libs download link now. It now points to a xz package of about 400KB.

I believe the developers use the customized version to Google to earn a little cash for themselves to get things going. I believe you are tracked to some degree via cookies even with the vanila Google.com. Google changes search result ranking orders based on your past search history nowadays.

With that said, you can easily create a search engine pointing to the original google.com. First, go to google.com and position the caret inside the search box on the page. Then click the drop down arrow on the right side of icon on the left side of the search box to get a menu showing the list of engines. From the menu, select "Create your own search engine" to build your own google.com search engine. After it's created, you can set it as default from the same menu.

Here is version 1.1.28 as .PET and .SFS packages
Released 04th April 2013
http://www.slimboat.com

This won't work in Wary/Racy as the libs are too old.
In Slacko, Flash Player doesn't work. Anyone figure out why?

It all seems to work OK in Wheezy, Precise and Exprimo but is posted here just for people to try it out.

If you go to download these, make sure you use the correct "download" button on the datafilehost page.

Thanks for these updates OscarTalks as I, for one, really do enjoy using SlimBoat. 8) Of all the Qt-based web browsers out there this has become my most-favourite of all to use!

Two thumbs up and a "Keep up the great work!" my fellow Puppian Friend. We sure do appreciate it, those of us who are unable to do so...

Cheers/Amicalement,

Slimboat really is a nice and fast browser.
It does everything a browser should do and speedily. I like it more and more.

Slimboat imported my crazy (giant) list of Firefox bookmarks flawlessly, where Opera missed part of them.

A few questions:

* Is it open source?

* Does anyone know how to change the 'skin'? I don't like the windows95-ish grey-brown and downloaded a fresher skin, but could not find a way to install it.
Theonline help leads to a non existing page 'skins usage and design'

Thank you OscarTalks!

Currently running SlimBoat 1.1.36 (official build) on Wary 5.1.1.
Had to add Extract-txz-modified.pet and libc6_2.11.2-10_i386.deb.

WARNING: libc6_2.11.2-10_i386.deb breaks Pmount.
(Fix is here.)

Also tested with Wary 5.1.4.1 and 5.2.2; same applies.
Will not work with 4-series.
It's very quick, even on a P2 / 350 with dial-up. :)

Also found a bug:
It locks up when clicking on, then canceling, download links.
Has to be closed out and relaunched; nothing major...

Edit:
I'm comparing notes behind the scenes with another forum member.
He was able to get QtWeb to do the same thing, and suspects a WebKit bug...

@ Dewbie
Have you managed to get Flash Player working in SlimBoat in Wary?

@ Everyone
It seems there are some people who like SlimBoat so here is version 1.1.38 as .SFS and .PET packages

Released 07th August 2013

To download from Data File Host:-
Use the small grey "DOWNLOAD" button
If you see a larger "Download Now" button it is a Windows .exe downloader and an advert so ignore it.

No...despite having Flash in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, I'm getting a message indicating that it doesn't see Flash.

Dragging and symlinking Flash to /usr/local/slimboat/plugins makes no difference either.
(SlimBoat is installed in /usr/local.)

@OscarTalks: Where do you install SlimBoat in your .pet and SFS?
(Easier to ask than to download, as I have dial-up...)

@ Dewbie,

My SlimBoat packages place the main slimboat folder in /usr/lib as this seems to be the convention for browsers in Puppy. I believe other locations would be perfectly OK also though.

I have still not been able to get the Flash Player to work in Wary/Racy or Slacko. I did email the developers about it some while ago and they said that they were not sure why, but that it is not a path issue.

Downloaded Slimboat 1.1.38, Italian localization, just minutes ago directly from their website. Running it in Puppy Precise 5.6.1 right now and posting with it, after searching the forum to see whether someone else had already tested it - and Xman had!

Just for caution, I chose to place Slimboat in a separate folder rather than in the usual /usr system folder, to be able to get rid of it easily if not OK.

Very fast and responsive, seems to have no problem on YT: if I get it right, it does decode Flash videos perfectly (they should be the ones evidenced by the rotating-balls-circle logo while loading). Also doing fine on a HD video in Vimeo, both in Flash and HTML5 (it's clearly marked there).

A very pleasant surprise was to find a specific link for Puppy Linux in their Downloads page (in English only, no such link in the Italian page): followed their suggestions and all worked perfectly in less than half a minute i. e., after downloading and extracting the Gstreamer libs in place.

Of course a deeper and longer testing is needed, but seems interesting, although not really lightweight - 58 MB against SeaMonkey's 51 (full package).
