Portable Wine under Carolina

#1396 Post by mikeslr »

Hi Geoffrey & All,

Just in case no one has previously mentioned it, shinobar's wine-portable-1.6.2-2-p4.version works under Carolina 1.2. However, the setup instructions given on the portable-wine thread, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 297#755297 require adjustment since Carolina does not include rox right-click procedures. To set up portable-wine, after downloading and decompressing the tgz, mount the drive/partition --preferably your home partition-- onto which portable-wine has been decompressed. Carolina will see it as a folder. Click the folder to open it. Then click the script named "Register." This will install a couple wine programs on the utilities menu. [Edit: Or make life simple>Install rox-filer via Puppy Package Manager. Register will appear on its right-click menu.] Thereafter, you can invoke wine from one of the menu items, or by clicking an "exe" file. If the latter, you may have to select "run command" and type wine.sh --note the ".sh"-- the first or each time. For applications I frequently use, I find it convenient to create scripts in /root/my-applications/bin along with a desktop file in /usr/applications with an associated icon so as to access the application from the menu or a launcher on an xfce panel. For further information regarding such scripts, see the wine-porable thread and my previous posts regarding employment of programs in external folders.
Among the advantages of portable-wine are:
vis-a-vis pets: they do not consume space in your Save-File;
Unlike SFSes, wine-portable is decompressed, thus less taxing on your computer's ram and CPU,
Like SFSes, the same "installation" --including the same XP programs--can be used by multiple puppies,
And --although it may just be my impression or because of improvements in the wine applications on which portable-wine is based-- by installing applications into wine-portable's "Program Files" folder --i.e. wine-data/drive_c/Program Files-- some XP programs which previously didn't run, now do.

Happy computing,

mikesLr

Carolina -- What's in a Name

#1397 Post by mikeslr »

A couple of years ago, when carolina was first published, I was slightly miffed as it appeared that its creators had strayed from the tradition of naming Puppys after a breed of dogs. I explore and multi-boot many Pups, and as a way of reminding myself, when it matters, which Pup I'm currently using I frequently will use as wallpaper a picture in which the relevant breed is represented. It only occurred to me today to google “Carolina dog

I'm curious as to which version you installed, all the rc's and 1.x linas have Firefox as the default browser.

By George ... errr... Geoffrey ... you've done it!

THANK YOU!
Geoffrey wrote:@edoc

I've compiled the latest Qupzilla version 1.6.6, this still has the certificate warning, just add them, should be fine, it's just a nuisance.

Made a pet of the flashplayer dependencies, install Qupzilla first then run the flash_dep_qupzilla.pet, it will add the files

libnspr4,so
libnss3.so
libnssutil3.so
libplc4.so
libplds4.so
libsmime3.so
libssl3.so

then moves the /usr/bin/qupzilla binary to /usr/lib/qupzilla/qupzilla, creates a new script in /usr/bin called qupzilla which loads the path to the dependencies.

Don't install this if you have firefox or seamonkey installed, remember to install flashplayer too,

Hope it works ok for you.

We got two of these refurbished HP Pavilion g7's to use as desktop pc replacements & they have worked well - and were cheap.

They are 64 bit so they may not meet your need.

I've patched skype version 4.2.0.13 so that it appears as 4.3.0.37, it now logs in, please test.

skype-4.2.0.13-lina-patched.pet 8.4M without QT suitable for Carolina.

skype-4.2.0.13-lina-patched.sfs 26M with QT suitable for Carolite.

I now have a new pc, Carolina doesn't find the wireless or the eth0, I'll continue to use the Lenovo Thinkcentre I have, it's a single core 2ghz with 2gigs of ram, should be good enough to compile with.

BTW what kinds of monitor(s) will it connect? HDMI? TV?

Cheers!

It seems to be a nice machine, has VGA and HDMI out, but I can't dual boot with Puppy, I have to disable UEIF and enable Legacy in the bios and Carolina doesn't have the drivers for the Eth0 or Wlan, that's the price one pays for having the latest technology I guess.

Hi Geoffrey,

If you can find the time could you please create a pet or sfs of XBMC 12 ? There are lots of channels which do not work properly in 11. Currently I am using the xfce version of Linux Mint Qiana for thet reason (it is the closest OS to Carolina so far) but it is still 2nd choice. I like the portability of Carolina way better.

So far nobody on the forum has been able to create a carolna installable XBMC 12
