I loaded Carolina 1.3 on a previously stable Acer Aspire 5535 laptop and now it's overheating - but only on AC power, not on battery power (it just runs down & crashes as the battery is old).

This model has an overheating history so it's sensitive to settings - I'm fine with the fan running continuously - and I have disassembled and cleaned it to eliminate that source + it sits on a good quality laptop cooler .

I read these re. overheating & power management:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2207627

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Radeo ... _and_Later

Anything there offer hints as to what I can try in Carolina 1.3 please?

Thanks!

I was just racing the overheating time-out on our old Acer Aspire 5535 laptop and went to set up a symlink in Seamonkey to the default email/web folder and got a surprise.

I haven't done that for quite a while, never in Carolina, so I was a little puzzled as to the means to handle a symlink.

I did sort it & discovered that profiles.ini needs the full naming string "link-to-xxxxxx.default" rather than just "xxxxxxx.default"

Now if only I can keep the beast from overheating long enough for her to be able ti use it ... tried turning off ACPI ... no joy.

Does samba and ftp access in thunar worked in this carolina?
Does Carolina 1.3 works on Intel GMA 3600 without getting a black screen on bootup?

@edoc

I had a similar problem a while back with my son's laptop - turned out it was a conflict with dual resolution monitor (I'm sure there is a better term....), had to turn it off in bios and problem solved

may be worth a look

Problem when attempting to set Desktop Wallpaper to 'Image List'.

I'm not sure what is supposed to happen with this option. The Radio Button is only highlighted without the button actually being selected. The desktop seems to freeze for 30 seconds or so, followed by choppy cursor movement. Eventually the window closes and correct cursor function returns.

I just noticed this using Carolina Vanguard, so checked on Carolina 1.3 and the same issue occurred. I am using Dell D620 laptop Core Duo 2.16 GHz, with Intel graphics.

The 'None' option works correctly.

Huh. That certainly is a problem. When I tested it in Vanguard it was much less forgiving, didn't recover as easily as yours and I had to force a reset.

I'm not sure what it's supposed to do either. I'm not sure if it matters though as Desktop Settings still basically does what it's suppose to do, show and set wallpapers.

Edit: Oh that's kinda cool. "Image List" is suppose to let you pick multiple image files that XFCE will rotate every time you boot in to X. Try deleting /root/.config/xfce4/desktop/backdrop.list. Then add the images you want XFCE to pick from and rotate through. That seems to work for me. Even the random wallpapers. Like I said, it's pretty cool. Thanks for pointing it out, :D

On the bottom right on the panel there should be a blue/yellow/red squarish icon with a squiggle try setting it on powersave, (blue) that will get your CPU to run slower, hopefully cooling the machine.

Is the fan not working at all in Carolina? Or just kicking in too late?

I'm not sure if the dpm option is available on kernel 3.2.13, and naturally it will only help if you have a Radeon card on that machine.

Symlinking in Thunar works slightly differently from rox. When you click "Create Symlink" it creates a symlink in the same folder and names it "link-to-xxxxxx" where xxxxxx is whatever you linked from, so that may be what's going on and why profiles.ini requires "link-to-xxxxxx.default", because that's what the actual file is called.

So the overheating is the only issue left? (At least on this Acer Aspire 5535)

According to this post the GMA 3600 does work with Carolina, though with some tearing in full screen videos. The poster says it happens with Windows 7 too.

As for Thunar, I personally feel Samba access is a bit sketchy in Thunar (ie, clicking "Network" to connect.) I find it's easier to connect in Gigolo, then browse in Thunar. Mind you, I'm no Samba expert so there maybe something wrong with my smb.conf that's causing my difficulties.

The "link-to-xxx" is a generic name and should be changed to the appropriate name after creation. Make link-to-xxx.so.1, rename link xxx.so.0 as an example.

wifi not working with Carolite

#1630 Post by stuvxz »

Thanks Geoffrey, rcrsn51 and battleshooter for your replies.
@battleshooter

'lsmod' gave me this output
(is 'lsmod' the right command to check for the adapter?):

(...)
rt2800usb 11016 0
rt2x00usb 6120 1 rt2800usb
rt2800lib 32072 1 rt2800usb
rt2x00lib 24368 3 rt2800lib,rt2x00usb,rt2800usb
crc_ccitt 1023 1 rt2800lib
mac80211 138904 3 rt2x00lib,rt2800lib,rt2x00usb
cfg80211 118408 2 mac80211,rt2x00lib
(...)

I still can't connect to the web with Carolina Linux nor Racy 5.5 nor precise - only LxPup 13.01 connects - the later LxPup 14 cannot connect neither. The network is just a normal open WPA wifi network at my school.

My HDD is dead and I am running puppy live from an usb drive. The fact that it is so easy to get online with LxPup 13.01 is very frustrating. I would stick with 13.01 but it is too slow with my PC and I am starting to have a lot of dependency issues with more recent packages I need to use.

The wifi modem is an old D-Link USB and the Dougal's Network Manager asks to load the rt2800usd driver when I try to connect, it says:

'The interface you have selected uses the rt2800usb module (...)'

'The following details will be added to the configuration file /et/network-wizard/wpa_modules'

'Module: rt2800usb'
'wpa_supplicant driver: wext'

I have tried many times with different puppies and I have tried some of the many proposed solutions at the murga-linux forum. I must run puppy live but I could do a remix so to have Racy or Carolina remixed with a more permanent solution.

Thank you all for your help.

@stuvxz: Here is the standard diagnostic test for WiFi.

1. Run iwconfig. Is an interface like wlan0 listed?

2. Run ifconfig wlan0 up. Is there an error message?

3. Run iwlist wlan0 scan. Do you get a report of your WiFi neighbourhood?

If Step 3 is OK, then your adapter is working. So your problem must be with authentication to the access point. But with an open network that should NOT be a problem.

I would recommend PWF.
The network is just a normal open WPA wifi network at my school.
That sounds contradictory. The word "open" usually means that no encryption (and no password) is required. The word "WPA" means that encryption is being used and a password is required.

It's not there & I could not find a power setting anywhere in the menu, control panel, etc.

Yes.

Fan runs constantly - gets warm-to-hot fast.

In 10 minutes Temp1 ran up to 84C then settled back to 81-82C, spiked to 95C then down to 85C (Psensor), Temp2 went up and down then up to 89C then down to 81C.

Nothing has been opened.

I looked in earlier posts and didn't see any reference to running a CPU frequency governor. Apologies if I missed it. To set one up, go to the control panel, in hardware it's the third item down. Pretty much accept the default choices and ignore any nags about 'bios too old' etc. I usually run the ondemand governor with the 80% threshold, which are the defaults. Once set up, it will be run on every boot. Again, apologies if this horse has already been ridden.
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

I'm probably just confused, but I thought the icon attached was a CPU scaler, at least, that's what it appears to do when I monitor with the CPU frequency with XFCE's CPU frequency monitor.

Hah, 2? I'm still trying to at a lot more than that :D The powerapp in the panel does set up a prechosen set of 3 governors. Sounds like some of the choices there didn't work on edocs laptop. The GUI in the control panel has a bit more flexibility so I like to use it. It writes a simple shell script wcpufreq in /etc/init.d. Even more flexibility there. My core 2 duo laptop will only behave with the conservative governor and a 50% threshold while the Pentium Ms are fine with the default ondemand.

Yeah I did find the "3 color" options a bit limited. Really want to see if I can push my sister's laptop to 1.4GHz or bit a bit higher than it's current top frequency of 1.0GHz. In Windows it reaches 1.4GHz, so I figured something is off with the governor in Pups.

It was something on my research to do list, so pretty glad you've just dropped in my lap like that :)

For some reason a printer set as default on one computer w/Carolina 1.3 is not showing up on another computer on the same wireless router.

Why might that be, please?

I can connect the printer to the ASUS router - should I go that way?
