Mplayer: poor video playback

#1 Post by ted209 »

I tried Puppy for the first time yesterday (Wary Puppy 5.3). I ran it from USB and was going ok until I tried mplayer!

I was playing a standard dvd (and mpeg2 files in mkv container) and had the following problems:
1) No video playback at all until I changed the video settings
2) the video runs slow and not in sync with the audio
3) vsync is not enabled
4) the video does not scale with the window (or in fullscreen)
5) mplayer crashed several times while playing with settings

Can anyone help me?

PS. My PC has an Athlon 64 3000+ dual core processor (and an nVidia 8600 video card).

With your specs
My PC has an Athlon 64 3000+ dual core processor (and an nVidia 8600 video card).
..forget wary and get either Slacko, Precise or Racy, and if you want older for the sake of it, Lupu. Wary is for older stuff, your's is not older, especially in the context of Puppy.

EDIT: ..actually, forget lupu too, you need the nouveau driver only available in the big 3 mentioned (make sure if you choose Precise DON'T get retro).

Thanks - I'm giving Precision Puppy a spin and first impressions are excellent!. 1080p youtube videos play beautifully (I'm sure dvds will too when I try them on my original machine).

[I am getting constant USB drive activity on this mahine (a Lenovo X201), but I'll try my main PC and search for a solution if it persists.]
UPDATE: just rebooted and this stopped.

Thanks again for your help!
