Hi there, sorry to join then post a problem, but I need some help.
I am working on an Acer Aspire 5734Z for a friend, and the HDD has frozen. They want to use the laptop in order to buy the parts they need to fix it, but for that they need a OS that is boot-able off a USB/SD drive, and so after some research I chose Puppy Linux (Small, fast, powerful, and easy to setup).
So onto my problem, Using Puppy Linux 5.3.3, and booting for the USB, it goes through the whole boot up process with the text just fine. However when it comes to displaying the graphical part (i.e desktop where you setup the keyboard/time etc) the screen shows very very dark, and the brightness cannot be adjusted (seems to be fixed at the minimum brightness level).
Other forums have suggested this is a problem with the Kernel (mint linux, ubuntu linux etc), but their solutions do not seem to work for puppy linux.
So how do i fix this please and then save the configuration settings to the USB drive?
Thank you for your time.

I was able to get the laptop to boot using puppy "squeeze" (lol)
and was able to get to my desktop.
I can now retreive all the files that are on the HDD....

" Backlight off at boot on 4500M
There is an issue for Acer Aspire 5736z
with a GMA 4500M graphics chip,
this seems to affect other laptops too.
When you boot this laptop the screen is blank because the
backlight is extinguished (you can read it with a good flashlight).
This issue is present in at least kernels 2.6.39 and 3.0.3,
but seems to affect other versions also.
The issue arises when you configure the kernel with the i915 drivers
and kernel mode setting. "
" You can get a display by appending "nomodeset"
to the Grub boot command, but this may stop X from working
and you will only have low resolution. "
Hit F2 at bootup...in Slacko
and then typing >>>> puppy nomodeset
might get you there....worth a try.
Take your time...
just typing one letter will stop Puppy booting
until you hit enter >>> after first hitting F2

I have a Samsung nf110 netbook I'm resurrecting that's running the latest Slacko and I want to turn the brightness UP.

Should give you about 71% brightness.

Hi all
Just going through old posts here !
Maybe helpful to someone !
Adding "acpi_backlight=vendor" without the quotes !
to your kernel grub line may also help !
If you are booting with puppy cd press F2 and type :
"puppy acpi_backlight=vendor" without the quotes !
Also see here: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... meters.txt
Anyway thought might be helpful to someone or even myself in the future !
