ALL PUPPIES! Firewall Docs gone from hosting site?
ALL PUPPIES! Firewall Docs gone from hosting site?
Wanting to find out how to configure the firewall in Slacko5.3.3, I went to /usr/share/doc/rc.firwall/rc.firewall.htm, which is a symlink to /usr/share/doc/rc.firewall/index.html.
This file contains a link to http://projectfiles.com/firewall/, which looks as if it has been abandoned, and "may be for sale by its owner".
I wonder how long this has been so? And do we have any documentation for the firewall?
And I assume that this applies to all current Puppies.

Yes, it is even gone from the Web Archive.
Apparently projectfiles.com may have been gone since at least May of 2007 (unless it later returned for awhile), according to this question at LinuxQuestions.org: Where is projectfiles/rc.firewall gone?
But, luckily soon after that, someone grabbed some of it before it disappeared from the Web Archive, and hosted it here: http://www.ledow.org.uk/linux/
Note that most of the links in the various .html pages won't work. You need to use the links on the index page.
Perhaps someone in the Puppy community can also host this before it vanishes again?

Would it be possible to have the firewall information/manual hosted on the Puppy WIKI site?
If not there, how about making a PDF file of it for download from a Puppy file site?
I know that I once posted a link for the firewall info on this forum after a web search for it.
But even that link may now be outdated.
And I cannot remember how long ago I posted it either.
FOUND IT!
You can download the manual from the post located here.

I just grabbed it and put it up at http://puppylinux.us/firewall/npierce wrote: Perhaps someone in the Puppy community can also host this before it vanishes again?
Will try and clean up the html.
Thom
The post I linked to as well as the other supplied by tlchost have links in them that no longer exist.
When I supplied the original file, the site still existed as having the info we want.
I have looked for a man page for it and I am just not trusting enough to know if I am getting any info that would help to post links to.
So I will leave it to others.
That also makes me wonder if their is an updated firewall that one can get setup info for as well as plain instructions on each section for those of us that would be lost.

The link you posted works in that it takes you to a source for information.
But...
Most of the links in the html file give an error of 404.
I will continue searching and hope to find a man page that the average user can understand in the options available and an explanation of what each option does.

Thanks, tichost, for hosting it. It is good to know that we now have a copy safely within the Puppy world.tlchost wrote:I just grabbed it and put it up at http://puppylinux.us/firewall/
You're welcome....I am in process of cleaning up the html...as some of the "missing" stuff I have...it's a mtter of pointing to it. I have an impossible schedule today and tomorrow...so will get back on it Wednesdaynpierce wrote:Thanks, tichost, for hosting it. By the way, I see that Barry has now linked to your site from the Linux Firewall .pet: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 628#662628
I am glad to see the interest in rescuing the docs and how-to's for the firewall.
I have again stumbled across the complete docs and howtos for it.
But I am not efficient enough to be able to get it all into the form of a user friendly file, pet, sfs, or html file that would be downloadable or at least accessable without worry of it disappearing again.
The current working link I have is http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Firewall-HOWTO.html.
Have fun.

8-bit, if you would like a single-file version of the document, it is available here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/pdf/Firewall-HOWTO.pdf8-bit wrote:But I am not efficient enough to be able to get it all into the form of a user friendly file, pet, sfs, or html file that would be downloadable . . .
This is a general introduction to manually setting up a firewall on Linux, but be aware that it is a bit dated (it's based on kernel 2.2.13) so some things may have changed since then. The documents specific to the firewall_install.sh script used by Puppy are at tichost's site.
