Sub_title: doesn't consistently detect the preferred access point

I have a generic, wireless usb adapter connected to a 5 year old, NEC laptop
with a pentium 3 and 512 ram. I have Xubuntu 12.04 currently installed.
The Xubuntu wireless software always detects and connects to the preferred access point within 5 seconds, so I assume there are no hardware problems with my laptop. When I use Puppy 5.4 with ubuntu repos, it connects to the preferred access point about 50% of the time. I saved the correct settings multiple times, settings such as auto dhcp, etc. Then upon rebooting, Puppy
5.4 detects unwanted and secured wireless services but not the service to which I subscribe. My saved settings disappear and then I have to perform another wireless search one or more times before Puppy detects the right signal.

Thanks

If Frisbee worked for you please edit your first post and edit the title to add SOLVED.
If it did not, specify the hardware you are connecting and ask for further help.

MY ISP doesn't use WEP or WPA. The service uses layer2 blocking which works fine(Xubuntu) when I select the Open option. I also couldn't find
Frisbee in the Precise 5.4 pet package list. Anyway, it seems like Frisbee requires the user to manually connect to the ISP upon boot up, which is the thing I'm trying to avoid.

Thanks
