I have started this thread for feedback, and will monitor it for a little while, in case any serious bug got through.

However, longer term, working toward a next release, is up to members of the Puppy community. I will not be coordinating further releases.

For reference, the Forum feedback thread for Precise 5.4 and 5.4.1beta1 is here:

frugal install of Precise retro 5.4.1 on Fujitsu Amilo Pentium-M machine

Boots fine and no problems so far.

The version of pavrecord provided in Precise is the older one though (version 0.9.1). No problem with the newer pavrecord 0.9.2 (released 22 Oct) which I installed as a dotpet.

Barry, not a big matter, but the download link http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/precise-5.4.0.90/ in the
'Precise Puppy 5.4.1beta1' release message dated 6 Nov 2012, on top of your blog, reports '404 - not found'.

This post was also incorrectly placed in the former Precise Puppy 5.4 thread, sorry about that.

low frame rate from glxgears

#9 Post by mcewanw »

I don't actually know anything about glxgears but I see people providing reports using that.

I've just noticed that in Slacko-5.3.3 (frugal install) with mesa added I get a glxgears frame rate of over 200 frames/sec on my old Fujitsu Siemens Pentium-M laptop,

but on the same laptop with Precise retro 5.4.1 (frugal install) I only get a glxgears frame rate of around 60 frames/sec

I tried replacing the Precise xorg.conf with the one I had in Slacko-5.3.3 just as an experiment but that caused my Precise installation to freeze on booting.

Running report-video from Slacko-5.3.3 gives the following:

Code: Select all

# report-video
radeon
Slacko Puppy, version 5.3.3 on Sat 10 Nov 2012

Chip description:
 0.0 VGA compatible controller
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600

X Server: Xorg
Driver used: radeon

X.Org version: 1.9.5
  dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

...the above also recorded in /tmp/root/ as report-video,
and archived with xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log as report-video-full.gz
# glxgears
1189 frames in 5.0 seconds = 237.657 FPS
1219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 243.653 FPS
EDIT:

When I run report-video from Puppy Precise retro 5.4.1, by default I get:

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: RetroPrecise Puppy, version 5.4.1

Chip description:
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600

Driver used by Xorg:
vesa

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
If I then run Xorgwizard from Precise retro and just let it Probe, it then automatically selects Driver used by Xorg as radeon. However, glxgears still only reports around 60 frames/sec after that:

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: RetroPrecise Puppy, version 5.4.1

Chip description:
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600

Driver used by Xorg:
radeon

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
295 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.969 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.056 FPS
One major difference I've noted is that when I run the command:

lsmod | grep radeon

On Slacko-5.3.3 I get:

Code: Select all

radeon 741728 1
ttm 36543 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 17455 1 radeon
drm 119536 4 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 3600 1 radeon
i2c_core 12559 5 radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_algo_bit,i2c_i801
hwmon 965 2 radeon,thermal_sys
The same modules are listed when I do the same in Precise retro 5.4.1, but the radeon module (first line above) then comes up with a 2 at the end, not just 1. That may have nothing to do with the different glxgears frame rates I'm getting though - I have no idea...

On Precise the following idea from http://inebium.com/post/glxgears-vertic ... blank-mode gave no improvement to the result:

Code: Select all

export vblank_mode=0
glxgears
Also on Precise I obtained the following glxinfo, but doesn't help me:

Code: Select all

# glxinfo | grep -i render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350
    GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,
# glxinfo | grep -i render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350
    GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,
Hmmm, tried this on Precise Retro instead and glxgears frame rate report good now. I still don't understand all this, but I suspect all is well:

Code: Select all

# export vblank_mode=1
# glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
6071 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1213.470 FPS
6251 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1249.448 FPS
Hmmm, I'm very confused about this 'cos on Slacko, if I run the same vblank_mode command as above, I get:

Code: Select all

# export vblank_mode=1
# glxgears
1101 frames in 5.0 seconds = 220.152 FPS
1143 frames in 5.0 seconds = 228.472 FPS
Like I said, I don't understand glxgears and these confusing results. So I don't know if video frame rate performance is better of worse in Slacko-5.3.3 or Precise retro 5.4.1 on my system.

EDIT: I'm now also getting the increased glxgears frame rate in Precise retro 5.4.1 with vblank_mode=0 rather than 1 (sigh...):

Code: Select all

# export vblank_mode=0
# glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
5877 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1173.988 FPS
5935 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1186.937 FPS
...
Can anybody explain all this?

Using Transmission to acquire precise-5.4.1.iso, I got an error in red:

Code: Select all

Tracker gave an error: "Requested download is not authorized for use with this torrent."
However, I did successfully acquire this file.

I did not manage to acquire retroprecise-5.4.1.iso, probably because there were no seeders at the time (5:00AM ET Sat Nov 10). Maybe that's just as well, because precise 5.4.1 is running this Dell Dimension 3100 without any "black screen" issues. (The retroprecise torrent gave the same error as above.)

I have been confused more than once by the fact that the installation of vlc with dependencies requires two dialogs and two series of downloads to accomplish the installation, one for dependencies and another for vlc plus related files. If user installs dependencies by the first dialog and mistakenly closes the second dialog as a redundant error, the installation will fail, because vlc cannot be subsequently installed as a separate action.

I tried three Gtk+ themes to correct the fact that the title bar at the top of a window does not change to a darker color when clicked, for the purpose of dragging the window. The top title bar remains white at all times, and practically indistinguishable from the Navigation Toolbar just below it. Sometimes, user has to click several times to drag a window. This is an issue for Gtk+ settings: Default, Flat-grey-rounded, and Raleigh.

As reported, 5.4 was behaving so well that I did a FULL, intending to be permanent, as soon as a suitable machine/parts became available.
Please can someone advise whether a simple upgrade via the PUI is recommended/ liable to be successful, preferably folks with actual experience?

iconfinder and YASSM

#17 Post by drblock2 »

Updated to 5.4.1 from 5.4.0.90 all went well.

But, when I tried to run iconfinder, it seemed to hang while compiling the icon list. When I broke off the program, I got an error message saying that the list file was probably too large.

Checking /root/.icon_finder revealed a list file weighing in at 4.28 MB, which did seem like quite a lot!

I examined the file and found the source of the problem - iconfinder had left my local machine and had started to download the addresses of all the jpg's on my server. This is why the program appeared to hang.

This unexpected behavior was caused by an unintended interaction with YASSM. iconfinder is configured to search /root among other directories and YASSM mounts the network shares in /root/YASSM - hence the entire network is included in the search rather than just a few local directories where icons are likely to be found.

This problem did not arise earlier when attaching shares with pnethood, which mounts under /mnt/network.

The problem can be solved by adding:

Code: Select all

-path /root/YASSM -prune -o
to line 115 of iconfinder after "find $Paths".

Alternatively, just run iconfinder for the first time before attaching the network drives with YASSM:) :) .

What an interesting side-effect! How big a share did you have mounted with YASSM?

One of the rationales for putting the mount points in /root instead of /mnt has to do with using YASSM in a true multi-user environment like Fatdog. An unprivileged user gets a full set of permissions on the mount point if it is in his home directory.
