Installed programs fail to open
why do I always fail to access kino, openshot, and its other, but all are already in the menu.
If nothing happens when you select a program you've installed from the menu, you're likely missing dependencies needed for the program to run.
Go to ~/.usr/share/applications, find the .desktop file for one of the programs you're trying to run, and open it as text (but don't edit or change it!).
Find the Exec= line. That should tell you what command it's trying to run. Next, open a terminal (if necessary, go to the directory that program is in, in ROX-Filer, and press the ~ key to open a terminal window in that directory), and enter that command. Hopefully, error messages telling you what you dependencies you need (or other problems) will be printed.

I don't know. It depends entirely upon the programs you've installed that aren't working and what they need.
(And, maybe the version of Puppy you're running. Some binaries you find online might be compiled for later versions of the kernel or system libraries than the ones you have.)
You'll need to test all of those programs from the terminal and make a note of whatever errors and missing dependency warnings they give.

hi andabandsen,
is this precise puppy 5.4.2? if so then there is an openshot .pet. In the package manager select the 'puppy-precise' repo (at the top of the window) and look in '`multimedia' (it's also attached in my sig)
precise 5.4.2 does have python installed, but some apps need a few extra steps to get them working, hence the .pet above.
as for 'kino' that should work (it's working for me), did you choose the examine all dependencies' option and install them all?
note: the ubuntu repos are being updated quite frequently, and puppy's package manager needs to be updated to keep it track with them. In the package manager, click the 'configure' button and then 'update' . this will solve any broken links you may have been getting when installing stuff
