Hi.

I cannot boot puppy precise 4.1.2 installed with frugal method. I get error "Finding for puppy files. Dropping out initial-ramdisk console" and no boot. My configuration:
a) Laptop Dell D6420
b) Two harddrives:
- SATA SDD Samsung NTFS C:
- SATA HD Momentus XT NTFS D:
c) Windows 7 x64.

I tried to do frugal installation on disk C: SATA SSD Samsung NTFS many times using different method and no success. Used tools:
1) Puppy Linux Windows Installer - V1.1.
2) Manually added using EasyBCD with Neogrub.
3) Manually added iso using EasyBCD.
4) Unetbootin installation ISO to harddrive.

I have searched forum with the error, but suggested solution didn't helped.

I tried many iso and many sfs and still the same error. Maybe somebody had the same problem and solved it? Thank you for every answer.

Hi mcdogger

Looks like you have a laptop with a minimum i3 processor and a
minimum 2gb ram.

If that's correct, then 412 is probably the wrong Puppy.

Consider - Slacko 5.4 or Precise 5.4.2
Alternatively - Exprimo 5.4 or Fatdog64, LightHouse64.

Do a frugal install to a usb stick formatted to ext and made
bootable using grub4dos. (change bios to boot usb before hdd)

If afterwards you wish to boot from hdd, just copy the installation
from your usb to your hdd, and then re-install grub4dos to the usb.

It will then offer you the choice of booting from usb or hdd.
(best to defrag win7 ntfs drive using win7 defrag before copying
frugal installation(s) over to hdd)

Sorry there's mistake in my description. I tried to do frugal intstallation with the newest Puppy Precise 5.4.2 and Puppy Slacko 5.4. I have i5 and 8GB RAM. No success with both. I will try to install to usb stick and then copy to ssd disk.

In my case, using EASY BCD, I created an ext partition on a second hard drive and had grub for dos put its files on that second hard drive.
I did not in any case want grub to overwrite the boot code for Win Vista.

That's a superb laptop - any recent Puppy should be fine.

Don't do a full install to an SSD drive - use a frugal install instead.
Much safer.
If you have an SDcard slot - install frugally to that and install grub4dos
on the SDcard - not your SSD drive.
Only after that should you then copy the frugal folder(s) / installation(s) over to your SSD drive.
Then finally - re-install grub4dos again to your SDcard.

That leaves your Win7 intact / undisturbed and operational, with the added benefit of dual / multibooting any number of Puppy's alongside Win7.
