Hello, holocen.

Poor man... May I offer my condolences. :D

Once you've crossed the Puppy line, it's so compelling, you can't go back to any other OS. You knew that, didn't you ?

BFN.

You could try this to erase your HDD completely

DBAN 2.2.7 Beta for CD-R and DVD-R media.

(Burn this file to a blank disc and boot the computer with it. Do not unzip this file.)

"old computer"

What brand motherboard or is it a brand desktop or laptop?

Dell ..HP..etc.

Can't get into the bios and change Boot order?

Pressing >> Delete key repeatedly on initial booting is
the most common....otherwise F2.

"""""""

You don't need DBan....it is a boot order thing.

And if you have a brand PC you will ruin any hidden partitions
using DBan.

Nothing wrong with DBan...but it is deadly.

No data recovery after using it.

"""""""

Please report back with your specs.

On the Puppy forum you are still allowed XP mate.

"""""""""

The following is the same for an XP cd......

" We next need to make sure that the computer knows to look to
the CD drive first for a bootable operating system before it checks
the hard drive, otherwise this LiveCD will never be recognized
by the computer.

When you start up your PC, take note of the text that flashes on
the screen, and look for something that says

"Press [some key] to enter setup"

or

"Press [some key] to enter startup."

Usually, the key you want will be F2, or the Delete or Escape (Esc) key.

When you figure out what key you need to press,
press it repeatedly until the system BIOS screen is displayed.

Your mouse will not work here, so you'll need to rely on
your keyboard.

Look at the menu options at the top of the screen, and you should
notice a menu named "Boot".

Hit the "right arrow" key until you've reached that screen
listing your bootable devices.

What you want to do here is move the CD-Rom/DVD Drive to the
top of the list.

Do this by selecting the down-arrow key until the CD-Rom option
is highlighted, and then
press the "+" key on your keyboard until the CD-Rom option is
at the top.

Then hit the F10 key, and confirm "yes" when asked if you want to
save changes and exit, and the computer should reboot.

If you'd done this step correctly, the computer should detect the CD image you just burned as a bootable operating system.

[Unless you know what you're doing here, it's important not to
make any other changes in the BIOS settings.

If you accidentally do make a change that you want to undo,
hit F10, and select the option "Exit without saving changes.
" The computer will reboot, and you can try this step again.]

The bios enter key in my case is DEL, and boot option key is F8. This computer cannot boot from usb, when I set dvd boot first from bios computer show me message:"cannot boot, please select proper boot device". I wont stop using Puppy, but usb is quite enough. I need good, simple linux for online banking and this is perfect solution. I want to install xp to enable file sharing between XP and 7, its much harder to do so . It seems that my only option is to use DBAN, Il try it tonight. Thank you, folks.

How about using Plop Boot Manager?

http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html

It can downloaded as an *.ISO to be burnt to CD or as a image file to be written to a floppy disk.
