Chinese Language Pets

#32 Post by icake »

Some bugs were found in 7 of the 8 Simplified Chinese Language pets, version 6.1.17 released last month.
I believe the impact of these bugs are minimal because they are all within the uninstall portion of the pets.
This means that if you install the pets and use them for Chinese usage, everything is normal.
The bugs will only appear when you uninstall the 6.1.17 pets.
These bugs will not affect the Traditional Chinese pets.

I have made 8 bug fixed version 6.1.18 of the Simplified Chinese Language pets.
The names of these revised pets are:
lina-006-zhcn-fx-6.1.18
lina-006-zhcn-sm-6.1.18
precise-5.5-zhcn-fx-6.1.18
precise-5.5-zhcn-sm-6.1.18
racy-5.5-zhcn-fx-6.1.18
racy-5.5-zhcn-sm-6.1.18
slacko-5.5-zhcn-fx-6.1.18
slack0-5.5-zhcn-sm-6.1.18

and they have been uploaded to the public sharing folder:

One of the major attractions for Puppy Linux is the option to create a customized live CD with all changes you made to the system.

This strong point for Puppy becomes one of the major deficiencies for all the Chinese Language Pets released so far (over 100 of them) because the changes made by the Chinese Language pets cannot be easily carried over to a remaster live CD.

I am pleased to release a small tool that will plug this big hole.

The features of remaster-en-6.1.15.pet include:

1. make changes to the exiting remaster programs that come with Puppy to produce new remaster live CDs which will retain all the changes made by the Chinese Language Pets

2. can handle the following versions of English Puppy remaster programs that has installed an appropriate Chinese Language Pets:

a. Carolina 006
b. Dpup 5X362
c. lupu 5.2.8
d. Macpup 528
e. precise 5.5; 5.4.3; 5.4.2; 5.4.1; 5.4
f. qrky 140
g. racy 5.3; 5.5
h. slacko 5.5; 5.4; 5.3.3
i. wary 5.3; 5.5

To use the pet:

1. download the file remaster-en-6.1.15.pet (size 1.7 kb)from here:
http://sdrv.ms/11oqMRv

2. install the pet

3. start the remaster Puppy live CD process:

a. /Start/Set up/Remaster Puppy live-CD; or

b. execute /usr/sbin/remasterpup2 (the existing program that came with Puppy will be renamed to /usr/sbin/remasterpup2_org)

and follow the instructions.

Because of time and work volume required, I have not localised the contents of pup up windows for the remasterpup2 program. I have only changed its window headings to Chinese, all other information are still in English.

I have done enough tests for this pet to ensure that it works on major systems and Chinese Language pets.
However, because each remaster test takes over 15 minutes and there are over 100 Chinese Language pets, so I have not done a test run for every one of them.
If you found any problems in applying this remaster pet, please let me know.

install on precise 5.5 zhcn fx 7.0.1

#36 Post by pewekodok »

last night downloaded lang pack for precise 5.5
zhcn ftix 7.0.1

after installed it, desktop icon were gone.
previously I edited ROX-fille/PuppyPin keeping only two icons xlock and trash, other were commented out.

other than that frisbee was removed from right side tray.

I tried to edit again PuppyPin, change icons' position but dekstop icons never appear again. Also don't how to bring back my Frisbee tray.

then decided to uninstall this lang pack zh. Menu language got back to english and got back my Frisbee tray, browser still shows chinese character.

so how to get back my desktop icons?
other question, how to activate my ftix input method?

as far as I browsing, ftix's purpose is specific for CJK lang so I want to try it. I am not satisifed with SCIM in ubuntu, which covers more language input than ftix.

You said:
"after installed it, desktop icon were gone.
previously I edited ROX-fille/PuppyPin keeping only two icons xlock and trash, other were commented out. "

To better understand your desktop icon problems, I need to ask:
what changes have you done to English Puppy before install the Chinese Language pet?
how many desktop icons do you have before install the Chinese Language pet ?

On the frisbee problem:
precise 55 use network_tray and not frisbee for showing network information in /root/Startup
this is the third icon on the system tray (lower right hand corner of screen)
the Chinese Language pet modified network_tray to show Chinese Language
may I ask:
how many icons on the system tray (lower right hand corner of screen) do you have before and after the install of the Chinese Language pet?
did you install frisbee before install the Chinese Language pet?
did you use precise 5.5 English Puppy ?

to activate fcitx input platform after install Chinese Language Pet:
a. start an application that allows Chinese input e.g. web browser, geany, leafpad
b. click on the input area so the cursor is active
c. ctrl + space
d. fcitx tray should appear indicating fcitx is ready
e. select the input method and start input Chinese

quirky-5.4.91 was released by Barry Kauler on Feb 27, 2013 and quirky-1.4.2 on Apr 15, 2011

quirky-5.4.91 was based on a completely new concept, everything is just in 1 big file, no initrd, no vmlinux.
To boot, you put this big file in a Linux partition (ext2, ext3, ext4), and in the bootloader file menu, lst, add these lines (these are just examples, you have to adjust the partition number and uuid for your computer):

for Grub legacy menu.lst (2 lines):
title Quirky 5.4.91 (sda5/quirky-5.4.91)
kernel (hd0,4)/quirky-5.4.91/kernel.qky pmedia=atahd psubdir=quirky-5.4.91

for Grub4dos menu.lst (3 lines):
title Quirky 5.4.91 (sda7/quirky5.4.91)
uuid f547d8df-78f1-44db-a84a-600d9e9185cb
kernel /quirky5.4.91/kernel.qky pmedia=atahd psubdir=quirky5.4.91

Other features:
.kernel 3.8.0
.everything is in one 126 mb file, making booting off network simpler
.supports f2fs (Flash Friendly File System)
.needs 512 mb RAM, 1G better

because it is new, many Puppy features are not fully functional, like:
.remaster
.universal installer

quirky-5.4.91 file kernel.qky (126 mb) can be downloaded from:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky-5.4.91/

quirky-1.4.2 is more traditional; (iso file 114 mb) can be downloaded from:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky-1.4.2/

I have made 8 new Chinese Language pets, 4 for quirky-5.4.91 and 4 for quirky-1.4.2

Simplified Chinese pets: (download addresses: http://sdrv.ms/10iH0Mw)
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid ... 3140544393
fcitx Input Platform: quirky-5.4.91-zhcn-fx-6.1.19.pet (11 mb); qrky-1.4.2-zhcn-fx-7.1.2.pet (11 mb)
SCIM Input Platform: quirky-5.4.91-zhcn-sm-6.1.19.pet (24 mb); qrky-1.4.2-zhcn-sm-7.1.2.pet (22 mb)

Traditional Chinese pets: (download addresses: http://sdrv.ms/YWXibx)
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid ... 3140544393
fcitx Input Platform: quirky-5.4.91-zhhk-fx-6.1.19.pet (10 mb); qrky-1.4.2-zhhk-fx-7.1.2.pet (9 mb)
SCIM Input Platform: quirky-5.4.91-zhhk-sm-6.1.19.pet (21 mb); qrky-1.4.2-zhhk-sm-7.1.2.pet (19 mb)

Also available are revised user manual and change log, written in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese and change log
(download addresses: http://sdrv.ms/18e4qYh)
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid ... 3140544393

To handle the new features from quirky-5.4.91, quirky-1.4.2 and raring-3.8.7, I have created 2 new universal half-Chinese Language pets:
download addresses: http://sdrv.ms/YWXOGn
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid ... 3140544393
fcitx Input Platform: fcitx-4.2.0-en-zh-7.1.0.pet (8 mb)

.compatible with Ubuntu Raring ringtail binaries
.Cups is Ubuntu Raring 1.6.2

With some twisting, I finally managed to get the fcitx input platform to run on fatdog64 621.

The half-Chinese Language pet fatdog64-621-zh-enfx64-0.0.1.pet (4.5 mb) is now available for download, it has fcitx version 4.2.0 with 4 Chinese Input Methods. Download addresses: fatdog64 iso (in previous message); half-Chinese pets (in first message of this subject).

fatdog64's support for non-English Language is very limited but it gives a taste of the 64 bit Puppy system.

Enjoy.

there are also 40 more additional sfs files available for download from the lighthouse download site. The download speed is up to 2 mb per sec

booting note
When booting from a GRUB bootloader, please add xforcevesa nomodeset to the kernel line in your menu.lst.

download addresses for lighthouse 503: http://lhpup.org/download503.htm

Because the setup of lighthouse 503 is quite different compared to the other Puppy systems, I have created 2 version-specific half-Chinese Language pets instead of update the universal half-Chinese pets. The names of these pets are:
fcitx input platform: lighthouse-503-zh-enfx-0.0.1.pet (8 mb)
SCIM input Platform: lighthouse-503-zh-ensm-0.0.1.pet (18 mb)

Half-Chinese Language pet enables Puppy to display and input Chinese, the desktop remains in English. Please see the first message posted under this subject for download addresses

c. 2 pdf files:
user manual of the 32 bit Puppy Chinese Language pets
version change log of the 32 bit Chinese Language pets up to 7.1.4

I would also like to thank forum member don570 who pointed out 1 flaw that affects all my earlier Chinese Language pets (half-Chinese Language pets are not affected).
Because this flaw does not has an immediate impact on users unless modifications were done to /root/.config/rox.sourceforget.net, I do not plan to issue replacement pets immediately.
However if you are using the Chinese Language pets (universal half-Chinese pets are not affected) released prior to July 1, 2013 and want to make changes in the folder /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net, please be careful.

I have just uploaded for public sharing the Chinese Language pets for Fatdog64 621 (please see the first posting of this subject for download addresses)
The Fatdog64 system is 1 of the 2 64 bit Puppy derivatives. For more information about the Fatdog64 621 system, please see posting on Jun 19, 2013 at the end of page 3 or the Puppy forum: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Fatdog

The names of these pets are:
Half-Chinese pets:
fcitx input platform: fatdog64-621-zh-enfx64-0.0.2.pet (4.3 mb)
SCIM input platform: fatdog64-621-zh-ensm64-0.0.9.pet (7.5 mb)

Simplified Chinese pets:
fcitx input platform: fatdog64-621-zhcn-fx64-0.0.9.pet (5.5 mb)
SCIM input platform: fatdog64-621-zhcn-sm64-0.0.9.pet (8.4 mb)

Traditional Chinese pets:
fcitx input platform: fatdog64-621-zhhk-fx64-0.0.9.pet (5.2 mb)
SCIM input platform: fatdog64-621-zhhk-sm64-0.0.9.pet (8.0 mb)

Known issues:
a. no Chinese input is available in fatdog64-621 terminals because I cannot get fcitx or SCIM to work in terminal
b. the fcitx half-Chinese Language pet is using zh_CN.UTF-8 locale because I cannot get fcitx to work in English locales
If anyone knows how to solve these 2 issues, please let me know.

I have just uploaded for public sharing the Chinese Language pets for lighthouse64 602 Base (please see the first posting of this subject for download addresses)
lighthouse64 602 Base was released on July 1, 2013. New changes compared with previous version 601:

Linux-kernel-3.8.7
GIMP-2.8.4 Image Editor
Pidgin-2.10.7 Internet Messenger
Samba-4.0.5 share to Windows or Linux clients
Claws Mail 3.9.1 Lightweight and Fast GTK+ based Mail Client
Mozilla Firefox 22.0

More information about lighthouse64 602 Base and Mariner can be found here: http://www.lhpup.org/release-lhp.htm#602
Base iso (257 mb) and Mariner iso (695 mb) can be downloaded here: http://www.lhpup.org/beta/L64-602/

The names of the lighthouse64 602B Chinese Language pets are:

Simplified Chinese pets:
fcitx input platform: lighthouse64-602B-zhcn-fx64-0.1.5.pet (5.4 mb)
SCIM input platform: lighthouse64-602B-zhcn-sm64-0.1.5.pet (8.5 mb)

Traditional Chinese pets:
fcitx input platform: lighthouse64-602B-zhhk-fx64-0.1.5.pet (4.9 mb)
SCIM input platform: lighthouse64-602B-zhhk-sm64-0.1.5.pet (8.0 mb)

Half-Chinese pets:
the half-Chinese Language pets for lighthouse64 601 Base can handle 602 Base.

Known issues:
a. the SCIM half-Chinese Language pet uses zh_CN.UTF-8 locale because I cannot get SCIM to work normally in English locales
I found that after installed SCIM, if I start an application in terminal with GTK_IM_MODULE=scim XXX (XXX = geany, abiword, gnumeric, firefox etc), then SCIM can start in that application under en_US.UTF-8 locale. But I have not use this workaround method in the pet.
If anyone knows a better way to solve this, please let me know.
