And the SAVE file going bad is probably the biggest recurring problem.
Usually it amounts to a config. file that`s corrupted, and fixing it is unlikely.
As I said, Puppy has other long time problems with no solutions also. |
The solution is to copy your save file. Actually, it's far more important to back up your data. It's simple to start a new save file.

Congratulations, puppyluvr! You're quite the mover and shaker. I'd be interested in trying out Lupen, and PupTV. I'd also like to see your Star Trek pup! (I'll help test, if I can.)

I've been here since 2010. I'm still more thick-headed noob than anything else. Guess I'm not really destined to be a dev. (It's OK.)

Not to pick on anyone in particular, but clicking on some of the links above, I noticed someone receiving detailed explanations and a file. His next request was:
Quote: |
"I've never unpacked a tarball before.
What is the best and/or easiest way to do it?"
|
Of course, after unpacking he wasn't able to follow the clear instructions, which resulted in
Quote: |
I`ll do ya one better..
Rather than go into editing menu.lst files and grub.....
I did it for you...
|
Okay...is it too much to expect that a user learn basics like how to unpack a targz or edit the menu.lst, vs building yet another GUI?
I hope I'm not being overly critical here. I think there's a point where too much help negates basic development.

Hello,
Quote: | I think there's a point where too much help negates basic development. |
I agree in some contexts. There are some instances where one should just say "read this man page" etc.. And "* --help" in a terminal will teach you more than anything else..
However, the thread in question led to MultiPup.. What it accomplishes is beyond the scope of explaining to most "newbies". It is not just "another GUI" to me, it is a way for new users to easily create a multiboot Puppy CD/DVD, which many would not ever take the time to learn how to do..
OTOH, PupTV was just silly.. So much easier to just paste the URL into a terminal to mplayer.
Of course, I have to add that studying how GUI`s do things is how I learned to code, so....
Also, most newbies have never used anything BUT a GUI..
Most new users are shy of the CLI, especially running as root, fearing they will bork their Puppy, and they could, sort of.. (Their save file anyhow)
(The classic "rm -R /" comes to mind..)
So "hand holding" can be both positive and negative..
I dont believe everyone wants to be a developer..
It helped end a marriage for me.
The CLI is your best friend, but try telling that to someone who has never used it.. BruceB made me see the power, the versatility, the sheer wonder of what a terminal can do.. I am forever in his debt.
But many users dont want to learn, they just want to use.. If a GUI allows more users to access an ability of Puppy that they would not in a million years try to work out on their own, it is a good thing...
Puppy isnt just for "Linux guys" anymore...
Perhaps a bit of lazyness on my part as well..
I avoided several hours of explaining with several days of coding..
Partly, information access is to blame. I have explained the same things over and over on the forum, because I couldnt find the thread I explained it in the last time.. So sometimes it is just easier to say "Here, I did it for you".

Hello,
Also, anyone wanting to try the Lupen alpha:
I forgot to kill Rox for Compiz..
In a terminal type "rox -p=" to end the flickering rox desktop troubles..
More info in the Lupen thread..
Oh, and I still think every Puppy should have my X-Toys.

System operations ( backup ) is a critical task ( not really an education ).
Losing your settings is a real pain, and time consuming to keep repairing.
As I upgrade to new Puppies a new SAVE requires much configuring.
I made a script to restore my desktop and the proper fixes to /root.
Thus avoiding doing it repeatedly ( much like reinventing the wheel ).
Some folks seem to love reinventing the wheel, it`s surely a waste.
Work once done shouldn`t be lost, "can" it so it`s reused.

Hello,
Eric Bina created XFishtank from xfish by John Bradley, which was repackaged by Joey Hess which was repackaged for Puppy by Tazoc in 2007 with a dotpup from Guest Too from 2005. Jef Poskanzer first copyrighted the 'rastofish' themselves in 1989. Its all in the readme. I even fixed the readme info which didnt work before.
I never claimed to create the toys, except the XPark charactors, which I drew myself.
I just made a GUI for them all to work together in Puppy.

I ran it from an SFS on OpenBox, JWM, and e17 for Lucid and Exprimo. The binaries worked and toggled on/off from the AppsRun script, but not from the GUI..which just added new instances...except for the fishtank, which worked as expected. I had to reset the desktop to get rid of them. Nothing worked on e17 ("enlightenment"), but then again we dislike one another intensely. Nothing loaded xearth ..gets complaints about not being able find the exec...That could be some issue with SFS. The XPuppy chaser was initially funny, but then there was no way to get rid of it without restarting X. In summary, the GUI appears to be the weakest link.
I don't really have time to pursue this, so am just giving one users experience. Maybe it's working for other setups.

Hello,
Umm, where to start...
Quote: | but then there was no way to get rid of it without restarting X |
LOL.. As the instructions clearly state, as it is a roxapp, you click the button to start them, and CLICK THE BUTTON AGAIN TO STOP THEM...
You post:
Quote: | he wasn't able to follow the clear instructions |
Pot, meet kettle...
Quote: | That could be some issue with SFS |
What SFS??? I made a pet, which installs to my-roxapps, and works fine..
Quote: | In summary, the GUI appears to be the weakest link. |
You dont think I test my shit?? Seriously??
I tested it in Jwm/Openbox/Icewm/E16, where it works fine..
It doesnt work in E17 because it uses the root window for display, so it cant properly write to it, which it needs to do.. Also Compiz screws with the refresh so they skip and flicker..
In summary, , if used and installed as intended, it works fine..
IDK when I "pissed in your cheerios".
But hey, thanks for the critique..
My other stuff is in my repo in my signature link, perhaps you may want to
"critique" it too?? I`m sure some of it isnt perfect, God forbid....
Any USEFUL criticism is greatly appreciated, as I stated above...
Maybe my stuff isnt up to your standards, but for the other 99% it seems to work fine...
Sorry if I took it personally, but....
If used and installed as intended, it works fine..
Well, except xpuppy makes the cursor an X after killing it, as stated in the thread.

Did you read it???

Hello,
Aww.. Thanks Runtt21..
But I just tinker about making things which sometimes inspire other things..
Look for a moment at what you have done with E-17 and Puppy..
Buddapup may have opened the door, but you remodeled the whole house, and built a balcony, and installed a pool...
No, Dude, you are the one who ROCKS..
But in the end, we all just do it for our love of Puppy..
And those who use it!!!

read my post
The reason I tested with an SFS, is because there are a lot of files, and I wanted to try on several systems without installing/uninstalling. As I noted, occasionally there is an issue with the SFS vs pet..which is always useful to know. Interesting that the scripts worked though, but not the GUI.

What works on your computer may not work on other computers. That's why we test.
