i really doubt that
because it is some 25 years ago
that I slept with somebody :)

did internet even exist then?
I think internet for average joe came 1989 or so

quote from wikipedia

The Internet was commercialized in 1995
when NSFNET was decommissioned,
removing the last restrictions on the use of
the Internet to carry commercial traffic.

The Internet started a rapid expansion to Europe and Australia in the mid to late 1980s and to Asia in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

/quote

Hotmail ...) is a free web-based email service operated by Microsoft
as part of Windows Live. One of the first web-based email services,
it was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith and launched in
July 1996 as "HoTMaiL"

almost remember this sitting at our biggest library and
reading that one can get a free email and sure I wanted
to have that.

Netscape web browser was founded 1994

so somewhere between 1989 to 1995 it got going big enough
to be counted as a recognized thing for others than the enthusiasts?

Before me was active on Internet I where active on FidoNet since
about1986

FidoNet was originally founded as a non-commercial network in 1984
by Tom Jennings,[1] as a means to network BBSes that used his own
"Fido" BBS software.[2] Over time, other BBS software was independently
adapted to support the relevant FidoNet protocols and the network became
a popular means for computer users to communicate.

Until 1994 with the arrival of commercial Internet,

There is an English song that is sang during the "Christmas" season in North America titled "Santa Claus is coming to town". There is a phrase in there that I have been curious about since I was about 6. It goes:
...
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
...
Coming from the strict Christian religious family as I did, I had been taught that only one being had that ability... and he and he alone would judge me. Then, WOW, he becomes Santa Claus once a year??? Some parallel, huh.

Surveillance in the hands of well minded people and "officials" can be applied to public detriment versus the public's good. Maybe the world is approaching too many Santa's using technology.

That's why the title and the WOW reference.

Then I get it better.

Maybe you remember?
Did we not have a thread some year or two ago
also about security and data mining.

Either BBC Tech or technocrati blog mag??
or some similar online mag. Wired or Saloon or what?

Anyway my tell me BBC but I can be wrong.
they had been told that some 70 small "cottage"
Firms lived on doing Data Mining of ordinary Citizens
and selling the info to Ad companies and others.

age married, where they live work with income
mobile phones what pages they visit what hobbies
and whom they related to using email and so on.

total info on everythign they dd online and they collected
this 24/7 using smart statistical programs that targeted people
due to unique patterns they made use of in browser and so on.

that is how I remembered it. I can be wrong.

would be cool to find that info again.

I love this quote from the article:
He said that he carefully segregated his work at Google from his human rights research.
At least I can sleep easy knowing his ethics prevent him from sharing with google his knowledge of what I am doing, and when/how I'm doing it. Just maybe google already knows...

Hope it is okay to tease a bit.

Some people tell the whole world what Pizza they ate :)

Another teasing. When I live in a suburb to Stockholm
then the neighbor under us played Elvis so loud we knew
exactly which Elvis song he loved the best .

Don't Be Cruel and Hound Dog. those was those he preferred.

So there are many ways to know people. Another older way.
some Reporters where so bad behaving them pretended to
be Garbage collectors and they took the garbage and sift through
all the old pizzas and what not and then found mails and other things
that could tell secrets about the Celebrity.

Many countries throughout the world have been capturing BIG data and setting rules of their internet controls and their uses of that information as they watch all of us. This is NOT new! Yet, the media (and politicians) try hard to make us think it is new. And, the most secret of the world agencies makes a Public statement??? None, of what these countries do, is new. What's new, is the hype being thrown around.

Unfortunately, "They know ..."

Our ONLY hope is, maybe, there will be a time when we too can see; OR, will be allowed to look.

Edit today: BTW the US's Prism program looks like a Political smear tactic, by some accounts This is NOT meant to consider Politics. The post intends to show what corporations and Government are saying about the hype and use of technology.

What's your personal view on Edward Snowden: a) traitor, b) hero.
Could your signature/slogan have had an impact on his decision to blow the whistle?

I come to think of a very old tech thing? Analog modems?
56Bit per Sec or something and using LandLinePhones
and volunteer enthusiasts did set up HUBs and the HUBs
knew about other such HUBs and that allow anybody
making a cheap phone call to the nearest HUB to send
a kind of Email to anybody in the world that also joined this
Fido Network or what name it had. I guess such easily would
allow the PRISM to listen in too using the Telephone Companies
stations to get access to all such traffic.

So if I get it. There is no solution to PRISM. We are totally surveiled forever?

I think that guy is a kind of hero but he should not have revealed himself.
Now he risk life in prison and that is a too high price.

Please, no one respond on the E. Snowden request. It would derail this thread. And that, I hope is not the reason for the question.

This thread is about the the issue of what governments having been doing when a group in Canada revealed their findings. This thread intends to show how technology is being used without the knowledge by the population of the countries.

I do have an OPINION about Snowden, but this is NOT THE FORUM for those ideas. So appropriately, I post those ideas on those thread design for that kind of discourse.

The Puppy Linux forum is about technical aspects, technical ideas can be exchanged, shared, and engaged, I would think.

What I would like to know, though, is whether there is a forum where we can engage the UN to make this kind of behavior shared across all countries and if the forum can begin to craft a structure for populace transparency where not only can the governments see us, but the technology extends so that populace can see them, too. That would be a worthwhile approach to what we should think of in a democracy.

But, again, that should be taken up outside of this forum.

Oh, come on guys.

You are all (I hope so) intelligent people!

How could you be so naive to be surprised on all that stuff like collecting data, spying phone and e-mails etc.?

Really, what do you think the NSA and all the other secret services around the world in each and every country etc. are doing?

Collecting strawberries?

Now, if so, you would surely do believe that each one of you has nothing to do with that stuff, wouldn't you?

Ah, come on. Failed!

It is ALWAYS YOU that makes them industries able to invent all of that technology that is already and still will be used in the future against you and your families: BY BUYING these technologies and using it daily!

If you want to be connected to your friends worldwide, where ever you are, you (better saying your connection devices) have/has to be tracked.

If you want to have immediately information about restaurants at your current location, you (better saying your connection devices) have/has to be tracked.

And so on, and so on... ... ...

You can't get washed without getting wet (freely translated from what we in Germany say)!

Actually, I think pizza delivery is an excellent use of drone technology..far better than anything the government has thought of..which is generally always the case.

Ok, I see.

You are informed about the 600,000,000 € (? ore maybe even more ?) German Bundeswehr Drone Desaster.

I don't get it. You start a thread about technology being used to monitor everything we do online, a news story breaks that seems relevant to the title of the thread and then you ask people not to respond by giving their opinion about Snowden's actions because it would derail the point of the thread??
