Precise Puppy 5.4.3 video driver fails

#1 Post by DaveKimble »

I have used Puppy 5.2.8 as a rescue disk plenty of times, and it still works on this machine+screen.

I have just downloaded Precise 5.4.3 and burned it OK. On booting it gets to "loading kernel modules ..." and then the screen goes blank, and the screen loads its own message "D-SUB - out of range - 26.8 KHz / 43 Hz".

I presume this means the screen (Flatron E2441, 1920x1080, 60 Hz) has been given those parameters by Puppy's video driver and it doesn't like them. It was doing alright up till then.

Try this:

This is probably a video driver issue.

To see if you can get it to work:
Boot with the Precise Live CD.
At the boot screen hit F2.
Add the command puppy pfix=nox
This will get you to a prompt.
Type xorgwizard at the prompt.
Select the vesa driver.
set resolution.
run test to see if it works.
finish xorgwizard.
back at prompt.
Type xwin
should see desktop.

You can also try one of these boot options:

If you have video blackscreen at boot try:

pfix=ram i915.modeset=0
pfix=ram radeon.modeset=0
pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0

depending on your card of course.

NB:
i915 is for intel
radeon is for radeon
nouveau is for nvidia
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

puppy pfix=nox didn't work - it produced black screen after "loading kernel modules ... " as before, no prompt.

The mobo is ICL D2700MUD, Atom dual core, NM10 chipset, GMA 3600.

Try boot option:

puppy pfix=ram i915.modeset=0

Must ask, you would be surprised by how many times this is the problem.
Are you sure you got a good download of Precise and a good burn to a CD?
Burning too fast a speed?

GMA 3600
You have intel gma3600, also called as cedarview.

You will need the Puppy version with supporting kernel driver module and also xorg modesetting driver. Upup Precise 3.7.2 and Slacko releases has the needed components available. At least as extra pets.

Check the Upup Precise 3.7.2 thread. You will find xorg modesetting driver pet there for downloading. You will need to blacklist poulsbo kernel module driver. Reboot. And there you go.

For Slacko the procedure is the same. Xorg modesetting driver pet need to be for Slacko Xorg version....of course. Or...it can be that Slacko has the xorg modesetting driver preinstalled with the script to get it in use.

Thanks for the help.
I don't know what "supporting kernel driver module" and "xorg modesetting driver" mean, and I can't find a Upup anything thread.
I don't really want to bother with finding out the nuts and bolts either - I just want something that works on any PC first time.
So I think I will just carry on with the old 5.2.8 .

BTW I don't know if it just me, but a distro I think would be popular is one with a graphical desktop, a graphical package manager and that's it - "Naked Puppy". I don't mind then downloading apps that I'm going to use, but I hate having to download mail clients, P2P clients, chat clients, music and video players, games, office packages that I'm never going to use.
