Internet connection drops after 15 min [solved]

#1 Post by Wognath »

Hello,
In Wary 5.5 I'm seeing the internet connection being lost after 10 or 15 min (usually just after I've written a long email and before I've sent it :x ). The wifi connection to my home router is not lost, it's the internet connection. Going through the wifi connection wizard (even though I'm still connected) sometimes restores internet access. I'm more inclined to blame this on Comcast than on Wary, but I don't see it in other OSs. Could it be something in my setup? Any ideas?
Thanks
Wary 5.5, Lenovo s12 via processor. Wifitray in use

Hi...

Could you open a terminal and give us output for your wireless adapter...

Code: Select all

lspci -nn
If your adapter is USB, the please you this command...

Code: Select all

lsusb
Here are some "across-the-board" basic suggestions that might be of help, although a few apply only to Windows.

Thanks!

This problem pops up in the forum from time to time. It's never happened to me so I can't say for sure what is the cause. I think it has been determined that Puppy does not constantly ping the ISP just to keep the connection alive. After a while, the ISP feels unloved and drops the connection.

ardvark and Flash,
Thanks for the responses. I feel like the guy whose car goes "nggggx!x!x" but it won't do it while at the mechanic's. Anyway, among other things I tried this from ardvark's link
Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 50
Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
and I haven't had a drop since... yet...
If problem returns, I'll update and post lspci -nn output as requested.
Flash says "Puppy does not constantly ping the ISP". Is this the same in all puppy versions?
Thanks!

I ping the router every 5 minutes to keep a netbook connected but in that case its the actual router connection thats lost...can't see that applying to an isp....just happens that puppy pings some website and makes users paranoid as its version of what I do.

I did have a drop after the changes to my router described above. I am now pinging my ISP every 60 seconds...so it won't feel "unloved". These intermittent problems are tough. I'll report when I think I know if this has helped. Thanks

Stay Connected

It is built in to some Puppies, go to PuppyMenu > Internet > Stay Connected to Internet

If not in Your version.
Download pet from here:

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Update:
I'm now attributing my internet connection problems to a faulty router
Thanks for your support!

You're welcome, so a new router has solved the problem?

Regards...
