Slacko 5.5 final

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84783 <-- bug reports

Deltas are available for final .. slacko-5.4.0.5_2_5.5-deltas-only from 5.4.0.5 to 5.5 only

(Happy birthday Mum.. 70 today)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok.. latest are DELTAS

4G << -- http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/slacko/ ... .iso.delta 4M

NOTE: 4G delta reuploaded with .1 extension due to wrong wl.ko, TY peebee -only needed if you have broadcom wl compliant WIFI card

PAE << -- http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/slacko/ ... .iso.delta

We'll consider this next RC. If you don't know how to use deltas it's easy, if you downloaded 5.4.0.5 then just get the delta and click it. Be warned 4G must match 4G and likewise with PAE.

use 5.4.0.4 devx, there are no dev lib changes.

--

Download <<-- HERE includes 5.4.0.5-4G (164M), 5.4.0.5- PAE (165M), and new deltas (from 5.4.0.4 >> 5.4.0.5, 3M each). Use old devx from here.

Kernel sources are already at ibiblio and mirrors or get them from the Sfs Manager

Comment

I like it still. ( ). Both versions, all sorts of tests, playing dvd's, cd's, networking, IO, encrypted savefiles (both kinds, though "light" is buggy, ext2,3,4) ..over 12 hrs before I committed. Sure, you may find a bug, report it. Though the changelog looks a bit empty I have submitted many changes to woof and Barry has made many himself (see bkhome.org/blog2).

Frisbee is seeming ok, I made some adjustments and will inform rerwin tomorrow.

Printing needs more testing. rcrsn51 has offered great help throughout slacko dev and has stepped up again to update ghostscript.

SFR has fixed more bugs than I can fix! All bugfixes included (I hope).

Particular attention needs to be focused on the devx (note current version available) (Billtoo, "strings" is the one in BusyBox now, please test, it's a woof thing) and the MSCW (yeah, zigbert knows  ).

A few more packages are in PPM, notably icewm and openbox+ (vicmz). Also Jerome's separate openbox, lxpanel, ocmanfm, plus some packages by Billtoo. Please test and report.

NOTE: For this release we'll leave the jury out on the "BUG".. we can employ SFR's

an AUFS bug? We'll see...
EDIT: no, added in workaround ,see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 251#682251
This is conditional on, not being PUPMODE=5, then being kernel >=3.2, then on the base filesystem being ntfs, vfat, ext2.

known issues:
There is a bug in the video wizard that lets some cards through that aren't nvidia or ATI/AMD,
billtoo reported this, will be fixed in next version. Also tallboy asked why it wont work in
pfix=ram, well that's by design and wont be changing, but I will make the gui more informative.
Xorg is a temperemental beast, try the fixed Xrandrshell from xorgwizard gui or quicksetup to
change resolution.

Here is bugfix number 1 (attached)

The proxy-setup gui written in BaCon is broken due to changes in the HUG library, just needed recompiling against the new HUG. there could be other BaCon programs broken with the upgrade to bacon-1.0.29.

Kernel panic -- never booted up

Hey Micko, I had a good iso (i.e. md5sum slacko-5.4.0.2.iso)... used pburn from within Precise 5.4.3.

Upon reboot things got kind of weird. The first line (Loading drivers..) took a very long time. Also, it got weirder and the DVD/RW in my HP dc7800 started sounding like someone learning to drive a Stick Shift!

As Romey would say, very disconcerting. It appeared to attempt the root switch thing, then my keyboard flashed its lights...things were froze up. I'll try another later, ok?

EDIT: In case it helps, here's my report-video output. I have an lspci report too... Obviously, I'm not in your beta ATM.

Sounds more to me like HW/media failure. The kernel config is not much different to precise. It boots fine on mine with intel graphics. You got another machine to try?

YES! I had used a dvd from an old pack. Man, good catch. Running Opera 12.13 NOW. Better toss those last couple older dvd's away (about 5 yrs). I'll run this awhile because I've been very happy with Precise 5.4.3. Let me know if I can help please.

Yep, works here.

Ok, I commented out the hack and the BUG is still there, unfortunately...
So far tried only in VBox, but will setup new install in real envir. soon.

EDIT:
Ok, typing from 5.4.0.2 on Toshiba L505-138, the same situation without the hack...
BTW, I have noticed (after enabling back the hack in rc.sysinit) that every time I reboot, a brand new line is added in rc.local:

Code: Select all

#this file called from rc.sysinit
#you can edit this file
#When firewall is installed, will append lines to this file...

if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall ]; then

Is it supposed to be this way..?

Wonderful to see another release!!!

Some issues I met on my way...

First run

- Corrupt X. Fixed by adding radeon.modeset=0 to menu.lst. This is as usual ;).

- One thing that always has been weird by Puppies is the default mouse-setting. It might be only my systems, but over the years, I have installed Puppy on a wide range of PC's, and at every one I have to open PupX and change values for acceleration and threshold. By default they are set to 2(acceleration) and 4(threshold). I set them to 1.2 and 13. What are others doing???

- As usual I have to run the multiple-sound-card-wizard to get sound. Works great! A minor issue is that Retrovol mutes the sound by default - no big deal, just want to mention.

Later....

- Install the AMD driver from the video upgrade wizard, but this fails. I guess this is what is supposed to happen in the beta stage. There are no files uploaded ???
I get only 1200x800 with Vesa (not full HD), so I am not ready for a long term testing...

- Great that inkscape installed correctly from the Slacko repo (failed in 5.3.3). Must be noticed that it is missing in the JWM menu after installation.

- Gimp - no menu for this one either, so this is probably not an issue with the pets.

- A funny issue that also happend with Slacko 5.3.3 is with the jwmconfig script. I like the virtual desktops to be in 1 row and 4 columns instead of the default setting. First time I do this I get 4 rows and 1 columns (the oposit). If I do it once again, it works as expected.

- Testing the pseries, I see a strange behavior of Rox (new to me anyway). Doubleclicking a music track in pFind is supposed to play it in pMusic. This works ONLY if filename does NOT contain any spaces. I tested in terminal
rox /root/within.mp3 --> works
rox "/root/within temptation" --> No good

- Is Inklite getting outdated? It troubles with a plain SVG (version 1.0) exported from inkscape. I sent this file to a prepress company, and it worked for them in both adobe illustrator and corel draw. It is a logo, - so no complexity.

Very promising - looking forward to Slacko 5.5 (or is it just 5.4.1?)

Ah.. sh*t.. .. this is to do with the new "database" Barry has put together, I think I now have to dump jwm_menu_create, thought it is near 5X faster than old fixmenus, which is slow on my 3GHz X2...

PPM is a moving target for Slacko.. we try to aim up I guess.

Yes, I am a dummy, so please enlighten me.
I let Opera save username and password for this forum. Next time I enter the login-page, the usrname/password fields are now yellow, but no preloaded username nor password string. What am I supposed to do? This is probably (hopefully) logical. Since both Opera and me are made in Norway, I thought we should think equal, but NOT. :)

I too noticed this some time ago, in 5.3.3 yet...
My "fix" was to add double quotes in /usr/local/bin/rox:

Code: Select all

exec /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/AppRun "${@#*file://}"
though dunno if that doesn't break something else in return..?
Anyway since then I haven't encountered any problems...

Greetings!

Is that supposed to be a video? I hear the music but only get static pic (I'm guessing that's it.. stock included flash here)

No music for me - No video work at youtube. I'll take a look later and report back. (in 5.3.3 now).

While playing Kpatience in jwm the window reacts everytime I click on
a card, jumps a little, I haven't seen that before.
I installed icewm and gave that a try, it works normally.
Also, when the cursor is over the corner of a window in jwm it changes
shape to a square, never seen that before either but maybe it's
supposed to do that?
