Puppy is famous for running on old kit. Here it is running on some new kit, 3rd gen intel i3 with hd 4000 graphics. I had to buy it to portabilize my work environment. I have learned some stuff that might be useful to some people: Windows 8 can be made to look and work just like W7 (by using Classic shell or Start8); Ubuntu can run Gnome Classic--not Mate but the Gnome 3 programs with a nice fast gui like Gnome 2; Kubuntu/KDE can run with Openbox as well as with Plasma--with Openbox it is snappier.

Congratulations on Slacko 5.5 Micko and thanks.

<Add: Another thing I learned is that there is now a Netflix app for ubuntu (at least. It includes wine, silverlight, and mono so it is 250MB at least--but it did work.

Welcome back young man. Your contributions have always been amazing. ( But nothing will persuade me to use WindozeAnythingAnywhere!).

I tested it yesterday and it seems to work well.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

New Feature in v5.5 - "Update Manager ..."

#349 Post by gcmartin »

Slacko has a new feature which should help us in keeping our systems current.

I ask:
  • How often and when should this tool be use?
Today, 2 events occurred when clicking on it
  1. First, a messagebox appearred indicating the system is up to date
  2. While a follow-on Window appeared (shown below) that offers update as of today's date
Curious for good system management recommendation.

This distro is clean, responsive and stable, thus far.

Thanks in advance for an answer to my question.

The message does not imply that "the system is up to date" but the list is up to date. You will notice "This list was last updated on (date)".

Perhaps the splash could be more clear. I'll note that for a future release.

If the program version listed is the same as the one installed it does not get reinstalled. In fact only seamonkey and firefox show always as they may not even be installed (depending on distro maintainer's preference of default browser). The list will update automatically at first run of the program if the database is older than 2 days. Why 2 days? I think it's reasonable. If it were to update every time the prog started, the server logs would soon fill up, so I built in some consideration for upstream.

There is no recommendation on when to update. The choice is yours. Update every 5 minutes if you want or never. Be aware all updates packages downloaded are saved to /tmp and will disappear on reboot. All updates will take up savefile space. It is also recommended in a splash screen to uninstall seamonkey or firefox before updating. This mechanism isn't perfect or else it would be done automatically. This is another future consideration.

Congratulations mic!!!

Looks like Slacko-5.5 had a big hand in bringing Puppy up to the #2 SPOT today in Distrowatch downloads.

Something to be surely proud of!

Ladislav may have the 'PCLinux' problem with that Mageia entry. According to a straw poll, it really isn't that popular, or of interest, or whatever. Indeed, some of my contacts hadn't heard of it nor realised the Mandrake/Mandriva & forks fiasco.
Mint, Puppy, Debian, Fedora, SuSE seem entirely credible.
Notwithstanding the accepted limitations of this method of data analysis.

Question about Firefox

#355 Post by dennis-slacko531 »

Everything about 5.5 is fine, except what's going on with Firefox freezing my system right from the gate? I mean it never gets started, so it's not an "update thing." Using the PAE version, although my Intel E6750 2.66/2G is possibly not going to benefit... I don't see the point in using non-pae, my PC is only 5 1/2 years old. -- So, for testing, I installed it twice with two separate media's (DVD first, then CD because sometimes I think my burner might discriminate against DVD's).

Bottom line, I'm back in Precise 5.5 writing this. I'd like to give Slacko another try, should I just download a different browser. I kind of like Firefox, but not if it freezes entire system (things freeze immediately upon clicking it from Menu).

EDIT: md5sum was perfect. I'll try the Phat for now, thnks

Odd problem dennis-slacko531

Certainly could be a kernel conflict, I gather you tested the checksum. Maybe try turning stuff off in the kernel like acpi. Maybe the video driver is conflicting, try modest=0 (intel is it?)

I just released PHATSlacko (in derivatives) has k3.8.2 if you want to live on the bleeding edge.

nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]

Xorg is a temperemental beast, try the fixed Xrandrshell from xorgwizard gui or quicksetup to
change resolution.
NV-3(n) (fx-5200) nvidia cards fail to display correctly with nouveau, it' s a bug with screen drawing..USE:

Code: Select all

nouveau.noaccel=1

on the kernel line (menu.lst, syslinux.conf, extlinux.cfg) or at puppy pfix=ram.

Have fun!
I'm brand new to puppy and linux, if someone could give me a quicky walkthru of exactly what/where i have to type/click to edit the code to fix my screen rendering, that would be great. ty

Hello IJTBU and welcome.

If you have installed puppy (that is either a full or frugal to disk) then the easiest way is to run the following in a console or terminal:

Code: Select all

echo "options nouveau noaccel=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf
Then reboot.

If you want to start fresh.. when you first boot the live cd append this to where you see the "boot" prompt (be quick, you get 5 seconds).

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram nouveau.noaccel=1
This gives you an unaccelerated desktop. However, if you need acceleration run the Video Upgrade Wizard (Menu > Setup > ) and it should automatically download and install the proprietary nvida driver for your card.

Hi Micko,

Some time back many moons ago, you made a GUI/script, that I'm currently using.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 904#349904
A lot has changed since and part of it is not needed anymore. Could you please, revisit your work to see if it's possible to remove power/cpu related stuff and make it purely a fan control script? Like I imagine it in the attached pic.

Thank you in advance

5.4.0.5: At first, thought I was doing well booting from an SD card into 256Mb. Res. was OK but a little egg-like distorted, wi-fi recognised and working. Several utilities and PupControl working well.
That's when it refused to boot Firefox. Installed Opera - OK. Opera needed Flash. Get-Flash; not working, referred to PPM. d/l Flash from PPM. only one offered, might've been from the 10series? Restart X. Tray missing. Wrong res., right click gives wrong menus, Opera still bleating about wrong Flash. Only way out was via CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE. Didn't get around to loading the delta. All very disappointing. Maybe needs (a lot) more memory - even more disappointing. Got two clients running 5.3.7.7 very successfully and raving about Opera. Promised them an upgrade! Hey ho - over to you mick, the magician! And, please, back to Opera despite your reservations, it's just received top plaudits somewhere according to my spies who couldn't remember where they saw/read about it.
Otherwise, great weather in Wales, isn't it Terry - think they're wallowing in snow and ice in England - must be an omen for the big match!

Next day: Yup! It is a memory, or lack of it, feature. Stuff the board with 2G and all the above issues disappeared. Too much! Maybe a swap partition would've sufficed - don't have time to check that. The 11series Flash eventually turned up in the PPM and worked with Opera, except it showed a list of deps that proved utterly irrelevant and un-needed.
Just a 'fat trimming' exercise, then, mick! Perhaps, bring back slimSlacko?! We all know where bloat leads...

Hi Playdayz, did you try that PPA on Ubuntu, or did you go hardcore and git Wine+patches, then full build from scratch?
I attempted getting Wine from git, apply patches, etc... on Slacko 5.3.1, but no dice, I got the dreaded netflix message error 5004.

I was wondering if you had any success on Slacko for Netflix?

Cheers.

Just a quick 'thank you' to all who worked on Slacko 5.5 - it's been the best Linux experience I've had to date and makes my old Thinkpad feel like new!

lol a lot of effort and patches went into that netflix app for ubuntu this is one thing I hope some puppy person will scarf over and create a single sfs file for the rest of us. would not be me, I lack the internet speed for download after download of the ppa
