| opera-12.14 was released the same time I released this beta, so it's likely there was a major bug in 12.13 (Feb 1) so maybe it's cured? I posted about this earlier, there is a new opera pet at ibiblio and mirrors.

Hi Mick
I am interested to understand why you didn't compile
chromium-25.0.1323
as this is the one in the slacky.eu repository....
it's been available since November and apparently works fine - I use it all the time.
Cheers

peebee | Simply because I could not find the slackbuild! I expect they may have just repackaged the deb version.
While I had the source I searched for a way to disable the "run as root" message, but it was a bit out of sight for me.
EDIT: it seems the latest stable version is chromium-24.0.1312.69, anything from 25 series is beta and 26 dev (at this point in time).
see http://www.chromium.org/developers/calendar
EDIT: just compiled 24.0.1312.69, 3h12m59s on an AMD Athlon X2, 2GB RAM, 2GB Swap, slackware-14.0, NO X running. (Slackbuilds compile in RAM so hdd speed is of little importance).
EDIT: 24.0.1312.69 now up at ibiblio, mirrors will follow within 24hrs

Just wanted to report that things are still operating smoothly with the frugal install of 5.4.0.2 on the Athlon XP box.....

Had the chance to wind up my old K7N420Pro (MSI) board yesterday. That's the one with the nV chipset, just before nV was acquired. A real beast. It failed to run stably with either Slacko or Precise using the onboard nV graphics with any driver. The trick is to write out the nV graphics in BIOS and install an ATI card! Works OK then, even with o'c-ing.
Noticed that both Slacko and Precise still contain the disappearing sr0 bug, despite much earlier discussion. Remember: a quick r.h. click on the sr0 icon causes it to disappear rather than offer the options menu. Can't remember what was the outcome of previous reports?

Samba -4.0 is uploaded.
Boy they have shrunk it, only 12M, was around 40M in 3 series IIRC
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-slacko14/samba-4.0.0-i486.pet .. mirrors will catch up soon.
Has the "Samba Simple Management" gui, useful for simple setups. For more complex setups SWAT is usually used but seems broken. Oh.

I notice in the release notes that "share modes" has been removed. I suspect that this refers to the "security=share" option often used in Puppy Samba packages for simple, unauthenticated filesharing.
In the recent Samba 3 releases, this feature was being flagged as deprecated.
Have you tested this?

Yes, doesn't work.
I might remove the swat stuff and reupload, broken in this build anyway, and swat is a pain. The simple gui should be enough for most home users.
Also, with the new "categories.dat" PPM totally changes the menu entry! I don't know why it would do that for something packaged for puppy . I think I might have to fool it using a different name, one not in categories .dat or at least one that falls under Network.
For some reason "Samba" is pigeon-holed under "BuildingBlock"
On a side note, many compiled packages with desktop files might need rebuilding :EDIT: no, easier to edit categories.dat if needed

Don't know how many others have notice, but SLACKO 5.4.02 has a much improved version of HARDINFO. The first 2 pages is a great view of your system if no-one has noticed. Just GREAT.
One issue that still plagues PUPs is the FirstRUN. If does NOT give opportunity to tailor the Network section when a LAN cable is not physically plugged in. The network section really should appear in all cases as many laptop users when setting up Slacko would need it just as much as desktop. WiFi is still a LAN technology, same as wired.
I am very-very impressed overall.

JAVA PPM messages |

I know that you are aware of this missing libs issue with JAVA version 7 when using the Puppy Slacko Repo. I noticed today with a REPO update to PPM, that on this pristine boot, Puppy Slacko REPO is returning JAVA version 6 for selection.
Just wanted to bring attention that the PPM is giving the same message on version 6 as it did for version 7. Again, I am sure you are already aware.

Hey Mick, just FYI:
Returning to the BUG for a while...
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/precise-5.5alpha1/5.4.91-k3.8rc7-nopae/
Many trials - no hangs.
Alpha1 with k3.2.29 still has it though.
Greetings!

SAMBA4 |
|
Tested SAMBA4.OOTB is works perfectly. That is, after install, the setup screen pops, Fills in appropriate for local needs, and am able to log in from a remote LAN PC without ANY issues.
There are 2 items that I believe others have also shared. After installation, - Menu entry is missing.
- SAMBA4 is NOT showing up in the PPM
This system's uses was very smooth
- Booted CD
- Ran FirstRUN
- Configured PPM
- Installed JAVA, FLash, Chromium from PPM
- Downloaded SAMBA4 PET from Ibiblio (mirrors do not have it, yet)
- Installed, configured and tested SAMBA4
- Complete Tailoring desktop
I know that the FirstRUN is BarryK's tool for development, but someone offered what I think is a good idea as it has wide "ease of use" for us. If the mouse configuration could be added to FirstRUN this would make so much easier for those users who have limited navigation/knowledge skills, while delivering the great opening experience that its already designed for. Just an idea.

I tried Wheezy and the newest Slacko with an old nvidia video card
nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]
and it boots perfectly with nouveau driver
unlike Exprimo and Fluppy
which sometimes would boot to black screen
if I tried to use nouveau.
