Running squid3 on tahr646.0.5

#1 Post by superchook »

I help to maintain some 29 computers for "Computer Pals for Seniors The Hills.Inc," Twenty five of these computers are triple boot boxes, either two instances of Windows 7 and one of Windows 10 or Windows 7, Wendows 8.1 and Windows 10. keeping up with the updates generates more traffic than any lessons on the use of the internet. Recently the traffic has exceeded the capacity of our link to the outside world and nobody receives anything much.

As much of the traffic must surely be multiple downloads of the same files I thought that a squid proxy might help. I have installed tahr646.0.5 on one box applied the bugfix and all updates then updated the PPM and installed squid3_3.3.8 the installer reports that the program and dependencies installed without problems. There is no menu item but running /usr/sbin/squid3 in a terminal produces the following error message:

FATAL: getpwnam failed to find userid for effective user 'proxy'
Squid Cache (Version 3.3.8): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage: 0.009 seconds = 0.005 user + 0.004 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 21456 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 0

and if you type "cat /etc/passwd" there is indeed no user "proxy"

What should I do to resolve this problem?

Ken
