I have Precise 5.4.3 booting off a DVD,and saving on sda1 - Home.
I also have the system on a stick.
(If this hint is in the wrong place please remove it)
To make a clone or backup
Switch off at the wall, motherboards are prone to fail if you play with them while there is any chance they may have power on.
Unplug the DVD and plug in a spare hard drive.
Power up and boot from the stick
Format the spare hard drive, I used ext4
Copy sda1 to spare drive - it is pretty quick
Shut down - no need to save - and unplug at the wall
Plug the DVD back in
Close it up, power on at the wall and boot from the DVD - normally
The spare drive is a complete copy, i.e. a clone. It is ALL there ready to go, and the spare drive can be installed into a old box. You will have 2 identical Puppies. I bet you will make a copy of the DVD and try to use both.
