Installed Gmail talk in Firefox, now Firefox won't start

#1 Post by joerice50 »

Hi Guys
Can you help with this one. I couldn't install a gmail talk patch from Firefox as not in root so read that I should start Firefox from terminal by entering Firefox at the prompt. I did so and could now install then patch but on reboot Firefox won't start.

Any suggestions ?

cheers

If you simply want to undo the patch just start with a new savefile (putting savefile="none" on the boot line would do the trick).
If you want to permanently start firefox as root, edit /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop and change the "exec" line from "firefox-spot" to "firefox".
If you would want to make the patch works while still running as spot --- well :) I don't even have the slightest idea what patch you're talking about :D An URL link would be helpful.

I still have problems with Firefox not starting despite the suggested edit I am now accessing this site via Opera. On clicking on the Firefox icon I get nothing happening. If I right click on the desktop and and select Firefox from the Internet options I get: Failed to execute child process (no such file or directory)

I now have
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Firefox web browser
Icon=firefox.png
Comment=Firefox web browser
Exec=firefox
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=X-Internet
GenericName=Firefox web browser

Any ideas?

Cheers

Note I cannot get the exact URL option when accessing gmail from Opera but the embedded google talk update is here http://www.google.com/talk/start.html. The update appeared in Firefox when I was accessing my gmail and then would not install and this led to the start of my problems.
