A small but nice addition:

If you have the latest gtkdialog, you will have a new icon for gtkdialog windows, /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/gtkdialog.png

This can be replaced with another file of the same name, the puppy logo for example.. as I have done in Akita, it's a nice looking touch IMHO...

Tested here on my GeForce FX 5200 card and works OK.

Please advise about anything that needs changing or improving in the pinstall and puninstall scripts though, as I am not certain about those.

Thanks, I have added the pet to the official 'wary5' repo on ibiblio, uploading it now.

Of course one can have larger fonts, but they will look different, not necessarily be bigger.
It's important to adopt correct terminology usage for anyone engaged in serious document composition, editing and information dissemination.

Wow... it's nice to know we have someone here that is so so politically-correct and terminology-smart!

Butafter working with these boxes for 30-years, I believe that anyone (all dev's included) who read my post and uses Seamonkey Browser in Racy would know 'Exactly' what I was referring to!

Maybe because you're so technology-smart, you can suggest, or better yet, even do a fix? I seem to forget... just exactly what are your contributions to the Puppy community (besides correcting others)?

There was one thing that I did not mention in my post earlier is that in doing the remaster I did notice that the script did not copy anything from the live cd.

When I looked into the puppylivecdbuild folder the only thing that was there was the sfs file.

Typical transatlantic attitude - quick to take offense, completely misunderstanding the meaning of 'good will to all men, help a fellow traveller along the way' and met with a hail of abuse.
If you ever get around to writing some worthwhile text in a quality word processor, you'll see the correct usage of 'font' and 'point size' in the drop down boxes.
Now, since you raised the matter, let's look at your record on the Forum. Umm, yes, joined 2010, contributions 455. Wow, a really committed heavyweight of long standing.
So, let's stop the abuse and try to run a well organised Forum with correct terminologies, correct spelling and grammar, absence of text-speak - did I forget anything? Oh, yes, good manners to fellow contributors, whether they are mainline coders, testers or users offering feedback as requested.
A simple 'thank you' would've sufficed.

To Sage:

Different folks... different strokes they say!

I explain things as I see them 'My Way' which is the way I have found most people understand.

You on the other hand seem to want to create a 'perfect forum' well, give it a shot and good luck! I haven't found one yet.

My objective isn't to please you, or others on this forum. I am interested in giving Barry information he requested from testers so that Puppy builds can become the best available and I'm sure most of the other testers here share that same thought.

This is a thread for the betterment of Racy... not for stupid feelings so let's let it end and get back to making Racy a better distro for which this thread was intended.

In the future if you don't approve of what I post, PM me, don't waste valuable forum space! (No more reply from me here... it ends.)

As far as I can tell, the grubconfig in Wary 5490 is the same version as in every Puppy going back to Puppy 431, except for a few small patches.

Racy 5.4.93

- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 82.526] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
...
[ 82.933] drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:05.0

[ 82.975] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 82.981] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast

- click desktop icon "help"
"HOWTO write programs for Racy Puppy" leads nowhere
"HOWTO multimedia" ---> xpaint, Figurine, Impress, GTKSee...

- it contains obsolete Ayttm

- ghostscript works but /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/ is missing.
See http://www.gnu.org/software/ghostscript/intro.html

- /dev/dri should belong to "video" group. Same for /dev/dvb , /dev/fw* , /dev/vbi* and /dev/video*
- /dev/console should belong to group "tty"
- /dev/ram should be a link to /dev/ram1 ?

- /etc/host.conf could have line "nospoof on" for security

- Big files
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/seamonkey-2.12.1/libxul.so
Can we do without...
LLVM and ICUdata are not there, a chance.

- /home should exist for adding new users.

- In groups, there is twice tty.

- /etc/modules.conf is obsolete

I've tried 3 different full installs without success.
Older Grub allows simple install to MBA.
"Robotti" version skips from "simple" to "expert" options that
do absolutely nothing.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Can you give me an example of a Puppy where grubconfig is not titled as the "Robotti version"? I would like to compare them.

Probably any version before this 5.4.90 Wary?
I've mostly used Wary 5.3 before this. It looks just like
other earlier Puppies.

So you didn't actually check?

------------------------------

@BarryK:

The problem is NOT with grubconfig. The problem is with Xdialog and GTK, specifically the menubox widget. It is now throwing an error message into 2>/tmp/. So grubconfig cannot parse the results.

I would assume that this is breaking other applets.

Wary and Racy 5.5-final is released, and there is a new Forum thread:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84748

That 'grubconfig' problem discussed above, has missed out. Yes, grubconfig has not changed for a long time.

Personally, I use grub4dos, which worked fine when I used it recently in Precise Puppy.

Anyway, if you guys can narrow-down what is wrong with grubconfig, that will be great.

, usb thumbdrive showed at plugin and mounted ok (pmount also fine in tabview after a refresh).

Audio CD showed as 2nd optical driveicon after media inserted, Pmusic 321 from rootmenu->..probing disc 'til one gets tired of waiting and watching how many loglines go up in xload.. quit pmusic and try .. pCD reads disc for awhile... get tired of that and see if retrovol is doing anything .. use alsamixer instead to check levels/mutes .. pCD reads disc again for awhile... try from the console.. give up on playing a CD and see if samples play.. eject the audio CD, re-X several times, get annoyed at pprocess (wish for htop) --forget this nonsense, reboot nosave!
___take2___
De-exec everything in ~/Startup. Pmusic ok at playing local samples, not so much at closing (seems to stay resident).
'deja-vu' BKblog - Pmusic 3.2.3 bug

Same 'can't quite get edge-to-edge' screen display with xorg editing for 1024x768 on my crt - a modeline almost corrects the offset. If I don't use a modeline, display is shifted offscreen left quite a bit

___disc-swap upgrade (modified racy5390 savedto racy5491 disc)___
background..
racy5390 has Pmusic 2.6.6, which seems a bit better behaved for my limited use of it (audacious just works for me). Plus my racy5390 is pretty much all set up as I like. So..

Some minor adjustments after the swap and it's all good, more-or-less.

Had a minor hiccup..
(see 'perils' for the full illustrated story)
..caused by symlinks pointing to each other, but fiddled a fix and things are back to par

3.8.0 kernel fine, as far as I can tell :) .. an exception would be sfs_load-1.9.6 (various issues with on-the-fly actions locking up the os on a liveCD multisession) .. these might be resolved with sfs_load-1.9.6-2, perhaps.

____________
test on: i686 machine
processor - Pentium 3 @1GHz
RAM - 512M
vidcard0 - RV280 (aka ATI Radeon 9200), AGP
vidcard1 - not used, but also RV280 (switched off in BIOS - aka Radeon 9200SE), PCI (old-style)
soundcard - emu10k1 (aka Creative Audigy 2 ZS or SB0350)
boot/save method - liveCD multisession (cd-rw media), disc-swap upgrade from racy 5.3.90
limitations - no printer, no internet connection

firefox 18 thru 20 for Wary 5.5

#93 Post by mikeslr »

Hi All,
In case it hasn't been mentioned before:
Following up on the advice offered on this thread --thanks sickgut: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=66373 I downloaded and installed --just click, Wary will do the rest-- libc6_2.11.3-4_i386.deb. Probably from Ubuntu, but maybe from debian. Firefox 18 and 19 ran, and 19 updated to 20 without a problem.
Caution: Although I've run built-in applications I thought might have been effected by the alien .deb changing glib and did not experience any problems, I can't guaranty that this will work flawlessly under every configuration. Especially as I'm running firefox in a slightly odd manner.
Usually I run firefox from /mnt/home. But I'm planning to remaster Wary 5.5 and including such "external folder" in a remaster complicates things. So I downloaded the latest version of firefox from mozilla and unpacked it in /opt.

Back up your SaveFile.
Sorry, I wasn't following wary's evolution or I would have realized I wasn't posting to the last and this has been discussed by watchdog @ http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 340#689340. I didn't notice the locales problem.
