Inside root folder you have hidden file .start. To change keyboard layout replace:
setxkbmap bs &
with
setxkbmap us &

But that only works if one have a save file AFAIK?
so as delivered in the iso, yes, you are right!

I continue to use ArchPup 12.12  (not the newer! I did test them, they are not good concerning such an use!) and have some experience in it...

and the iso doesn't include some script "fast remaster with you new /root/.start"

but it would possible to include one!

and more...

in my /root/.start,

a/ /root/.start arrange (manually) a /mnt/home as in each Puppy (reason: all other definitions can be neutral for /mnt/home, not especially for /mnt/sda1 or /mnt/sda2 etc.)
b/ /root/.start copy my /mnt/home/seamonkey/ into /root/.mozilla

so that I have all settings for mozilla but never save unwished personal data back  (mozilla is highly undiscret) as I don't use save files any more or really only very limited save files (32 Mb because less is not possible in Puppy! 1,45 Mb = a floppy disk would be more bettet   !)

c/ adapt my keyboard as in 10 YEARS Puppy was not able to learn, that Swiss People have an own keyboard layout (poor Swiss people: they are comdemned to create her own Linux if they wish to write on her own keyboard layout, and what for grandios Linuxes: SliTaz made in Swiss, NuTyx made in Swiss, a grandios fully automatic compiled version of LFS, Debris Linux, a shrink form of Ubuntu, live, in 4 tongues of courses, as SliTaz, in 180 MB, as a lot of Puppies not beeing friendly able to handle 4 languages  . Ok, Debris would need some freshness now. But an 100 % compatible from his actual Ubuntu at parution time in 180 MB, the size of a lot of new Puppies...).

and that the US keyboard

that itself offers 2 great international keyboard layout: US accentos, a part of US intl (you can write with US intl 10..15 different languages completely right! but Puppy will continue to ignore that reallity and offers ONLY a selection's screen where it is only possible to select under 100 possible selections... I suppose that the US_intl keyboard can handle the initial language of a lot of mens wishing to ignore now other languages than English...

...the wrong one! No possibility to entry one right one  ).

(explanation: I write US_intl on a CH_de hardware keyboard: the maximal bad constallation...)

in Quirky all-in-the-kernel it is of course a terrible situation:

actually

you can't remaster any more, it seems to be so :x ...

Yes you are right. we need to find a Linux Developer
that have the same idea that you describe here.

that the user should be able to tell the Iso or at least
the frugal install what kind of personal settings they want
without making save files and then each program
should be modular in that one can chose which one
to load on the fly and so no need for to have save files.

Maybe we derail the thread? Sorry
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

you know how many forum users are so long member of the forum and have writen more than 1000 messages (=are really active) and are longer member as I?

less than 10!

(and I was adept of Puppy before the forum did exist! I did really use version 0.4 dailly! I have yet the ISO with only 24 MB if I good remember)

and

since this time I plead to take care on poor user of the rest of world don't using English daily, poor Swiss people etc. All the message are yet in the forum, you can read them again! The messages from May 2005 are yet readable and I thank John Murga for that, that he did never erase or loose some part of the data base...

Quirky 5.4.91 is the starting point of, perhaps, but I am really optimist, that it is so, a new aera in building new distributions

but

it is the actual stand of the matter

without chance to remasterize such errors as forget a such important population of the world as are the Swiss people (I am not Swiss at all: I only join to the same language problems: My mother tongue is French, I never did learn English. My family language is German! It is the situation of millions of European people: live on a old land demarcations line in a continent making it very difficult to unify itself!)... As Puppy did appear, they were not Slitaz, no BeatrIX/Debris, no Nutyx! They did become necessary because of the absence of distro taking consideration the needs of the highly performant little Swiss people  , an error made even by German people themself until yet (Lazy Puppy in German  : no Swiss keyboard possible  !!! we write 2013  ! Download the ISO and look yourself if you think I would exaggerate!)

Nowadays RAM is very cheap and harddisk is extremely fast and thus provide very suitable condition for this single big “kernel.qky
