My desktop went black...why?

I am using puppy 5.2.8 with a 10GB save file (I know it's a big size for a save file but I am just testing different save file sizes). I have 3GB of RAM. Any idea why the desktop went black. I could still do things though. I tried restarting X. Nothing happened so I restarted Puppy and that worked. I am finally making progress in Puppy 5.2.8! I am really enjoying all the things I can do:). |

With myself a sketchy graphics card, no explanations- only  vbetool dpms on.
See.. in most cases X is still running. What this does is reinitialize the hardware. |
