a VERY quick trial of both wary & racy 5.5 on a lenovo t61
racy booted to desktop with lan, sound and video to correct res, volume control buttons not recognised but volume adjust in tray ok, tried puzzle games from ppm as test - ok
wary booted to desktop after xorg probe ok with sound and lan, no volume controls via buttons again as above, tray ok, installed simple samba via ppm ok but unable to select partition (wanted sdb1 but cannot select partition, takes first folder in partition, then fist folder in the next etc), was unable to select with typing /mnt/sdb1 either
both correctly saved to ext4 saves on ext2 partition
further testing later
ps - wary has visible screen redraw when switching between browser and desktop

Wary and Racy 5.5, released March 3, 2013 Subject description: Racy 5.5 |
|
I booted with the live dvd and created a frugal install on the hard
drive with the universal installer.
video-info-glx 1.5.1 Sat 2 Mar 2013 on Racy Puppy 5.5 Linux 3.0.66 i686
0.0 VGA compatible controller:nVidia CorporationGF108[GeForce GT 430](rev a1)
oem: NVIDIA
product: GF108 Board - 1071v0p1 Chip Rev
X Server: Xorg Driver: nvidia
X.Org version: 1.11.0
dimensions: 3840x1080 pixels (1048x291 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 430/PCIe/SSE2/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 4.3.0 NVIDIA 310.32
I booted with puppy pfix=nox, ram and ran xorgwizard, chose nouveau, and
xwin to the desktop.
I installed quite a few pets and a google earth sfs, the proprietary
nvidia driver, then ran the remaster puppy live cd.
Once it had created the puppylivecdbuild directory I copied all the
files that I thought it needed from the cd to the directory (must have
guessed right because it worked) and finished the remaster script,
burned the remastered iso to dvd.
I'm running from the remaster now.
Thanks for Racy 5.5.

Racy 5.5 on Dell D430,
I tried to do a remaster and the script does not copy anything from the live cd just makes the sfs, nothing else is in the puppylivecdbuild folder.

Fresh manual frugal install of Racy 5.5 on the trusty old Athlon XP box.Sound and internet good on initial boot.....incorrect resolution of 1280x1024 with the "vesa" driver.
Quickest remedy for me is to copy over a known good xorg.conf immediately after making a savefile. Presto, 1440x900 resolution with the correct "nouveau" driver.
This old Nvidia card is no longer supported by an official Nvidia driver so nouveau is as good as it gets.
All else looking good so far.

5.5: Both run everything ootb, including Flash.
Racy also runs default with old nV GF4/MX440 card, albeit needing a setup adjustment to run 1280x768 on a 1440x900 monitor.
Nice work!

Racy-5.5 |
|
Just curious about the advantages of...
the final Racy 5.5 coming down the ladder from a 3.8.0 kernel in the Racy-5.4.91 build to a 3.0.66 kernel in the final Racy-5.5 build?
And is in fact Racy-5.5 the same as Racy-5.4.93?
Three trys to get WiFi to allow a setup in SNS but seems to be working OK. So those experiencing difficulty setting up should try several times before posting a problem!
All else appears to be working as expected from this end.

Glibc upgrade of wary 5.5 |
|
I tried glibc upgrade of wary 5.5 to run firefox 19.0. See:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1217315201&t=83876
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1217315201&t=66373
WARNING: the glibc upgrade is not-reversible: removing the upgrade by PPM does not work and if you remove the upgrade the wary installed gets unusable.
The glibc upgrade is useful to get a working firefox 19.0 but it corrupts locales. Running "locale" in terminal it exits in:
"Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: no such file or directory"
I had two Gtk warnings installing a usbflash drive after glibc upgrade due to corrupting of locales. But the usb flashdrive seems to work. Is there any workaround for this problem? What other errors can I get after glibc upgrade? I know that I tried a not-standard procedure but I don't know other ways of getting a latest working firefox in wary 5.5 if you don't use glibc upgrade. Perhaps I should better use a older browser before version 18.0 of firefox. What do you think?
EDIT: solved! In /etc/profile I have set at the end:
Now running "locale" in terminal I have no errors after glibc upgrade.

Ha ha, your reply just got in first!
if you click the 'install' button on the desktop, there is another button to install SFS files, which will offer the kernel source SFS files to download and install.
Except, some sources are missing, I'm uploading them now.
Wary has the 2.6.32.59 kernel.
Racy has 3.0.66 kernel.
I have replied in more detail in my blog:

At line 425 of /usr/sbin/remasterpup2 - change cp -a -n to cp -a -u . Fixed. This pup looks good!

Yes, the remasterpup2 script has a bug.
I made a change at the last minute to the 'cp' command, added the '-n' option, which I got out of an online man page.
But, the 'cp' in Puppy does not support -n, so I have changed it to -u
Try the attached. Gunzip it, place at /usr/sbin, make sure permissions are executable.

so much fail |
|
Racy 5.5 hates both machines, mouse lockup on laptop at 50%, corrupt save files, shutdown ends oddly and differently if reboot verses shutdown, xorgwizard fails to return from neverland NV.pet never seems to 'take' screen size not supported by monitor, and reset prompts are centered underneath monitor supplied WARNING message, so unable to get around it, the long supported Ctrl-Alt reset of X is non-functional
Having to post this message from a windows box....
