What is the relation between Puppy and slackware?

Slackware is one of the oldest original linux distributions. There are several variations based on Slackware much like the various Fedora(Red Hat) and Debian based distros. Vector Linux is based on Slackware and I understand Barry uses/used it as his development system for Puppy. I consider Puppy to be a unique distribution in it's own right.

Slackware was named after the concept of "Slack" in the cult Cult - "The Church of the Subgenius" (from which I have been ex-communicated for lack of heresy)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_ ... nius#Slack

IMO the best version is SLAX - very simple. very nice

Slack was the first version of Linux I ever tried to use . . . it was like eating tar . . .
Now it has excellent versions such as Vector and Zenwalk and I believe Austrumi is a derivative?

Hope that adds light . . .

If you're talking about SLAX mo files then yes, they are just squash filesystems.

Code: Select all

mount -o loop module.mo /mnt/data
And then copy out the contensts to somewhere useful.

many work.
The whole KDE-Desktop works in Puppy :)

Here some info on how I have used KDE from Slackeare 10.2:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=7394

You extract a .tgz , edit the installscript to use the local path instead of absolute, and run it.
The installscript often just creates some missing symlinks.
When they were created, you can pack the extracted folder to a Dotpup or xxx.sfs.

This certainly will not work with every Package, but I was astonished, how good it works with the complex KDE.

convert to tgz

In Slax, I guess there is a mo2tgz utility that you can use from within Slax to make a tgz file out of mo.

With Puppy2's new directory structure, moving files to/from its kid distros could be easier. I have already tried Austrumi's Apache package and it works well in Puppy2. Trying Slax mo's will be next. 8)
