alphaOS [closed]
Thanks, I missed a lot of the discussion. So Alpha OS and use pacman and frugal install? I will still consider it a Apup flavor. Same as I consider Pussy in a similar category as Dpups.
Good move to rename as it avoids confusion.
Incidentally, did you consider modifying woof to allow it create what you wanted your OS to feature?

Been away for a while!
So Archpup is discontinued, Sorry to hear it, best puppy I've ever used
At least you started a fire under BarryK's ass and drove him to
make a woof version but it sounds kinda useless to me with out arch repo's
I think I will stay with Archpup 12.12.2 till something major breaks.
Works perfect for me now.

new forum
OK, noted, new forum for AlphaOS...simargl wrote:darkcity, here is Barry K. comment about Archpup

I felt it not fair from me continue with using Pup name in distro that is really very different, and because of problems withBarryK wrote:Good luck to simargl though. His distro has it's own site and is really a fork, that is based on some of the Puppy initrd and skeleton infrastructure. So, it stands alone as it's own distro.
udev, iconv and because I like to experiment here is alphaOS where everything is compiled from scratch. Things that
defined Archpup like openbox, dynamic menu update, conky, tint2, spaceFM are still here, and off course option for easy
switching deskops with sfs modules.

Does that mean that we've finally seen the end of cheap shots like this?simargl wrote:New forum: http://alphaos.freeforums.org/index.php

Same happened for me on older computer with nvidia card, terminal with only frame shownally wrote:frugal install to ibm t21, booted to desktop but in low res
unable to use terminal (opens but frame only with background visible)
other programs same window problem
except resolution was 1280x1024. But on intel it works flawlessly, so I think perhaps included
kernel/Xorg/Mesa are just too new for some devices.
I've added Firefox extended support release to avoid frequent firefox updates, and this version (17.0.4) is really new - released 07-Mar-2013.john3voltas wrote:I just wished there was a way to remove Firefox ESR that comes with AlphaOS.
See here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... atest-esr/
/usr/lib/firefox contains firefox files.

It would be nice if you apologise for that post, since it is completely wrong. As has been posted elsewhere, I developed Arch Puppy in Woof back in 2009. Recently, I was merely updating it, as time marches on and it had become broken.Scooby wrote:Been away for a while!

The Woof-build of Arch Puppy was worked on awhile back by noryb009, but there were still some things to fix. Noryb009 contributed some more to Woof a few months ago. Recently I decided to do a test build in Woof, and discovered things that needed fixing, which I reported in my blog.
Huh, Arch repos? Like all Woof-built pups, a Puppy built from Arch packages has access to the Arch repos via the Puppy Package manager.
I have posted a comment and some links:

But then, I have become accustomed to nasty personal attacks over the years, so shouldn't even have bothered to post this reply to yours.
So, don't bother to apologise, I don't care.

Yes there is. Incorrect statements need to be corrected.john3voltas wrote:No reason for us to get all uptight about this.
That's not for you to say. Anyone reading his post would view it as disrespectful, especially considering the facts of the situation.I'm sure scooby didn't mean to be disrespectful
How else should he take it? Consider simargl's record for taking things personally.and I think you BarryK took it a bit on the personal side.
Then maybe you would all be happier working from its new forum.Besides, simargl's ArchPup is gone. Now AlphaOS lives

I'm sorry, I still can't interpret it as "disrespectful". What facts of the situation were you referring to? Maybe that would help me see your point.rcrsn51 wrote:That's not for you to say. Anyone reading his post would view it as disrespectful, especially considering the facts of the situation.
I personally haven't "seen" simargl taking things personally.rcrsn51 wrote:How else should he take it? Consider simargl's record for taking things personally.
On the contrary, I have seen him coping very well with some angry puppy-advocate-users that almost felt it was blasphemy not to include most Puppy's GTK small-set-of-tools in simargl's ArchPup. From a regular user point of view, there is no harm done by simargl and his projects based on Woof. Again, on the opposite: simargl projects have have been tagged by some of us as our best puppies ever.
This means that simargl did a pretty nice job and as a side effect he did help some of the puppy community to enjoy puppy even more than we already did.
Now, is that really necessary?rcrsn51 wrote:Any maybe you would all be happier working from its new forum.
I know I wish it wouldn't be necessary at all.
Well...this is Puppy Linux discussion forum. See the page main label.
Here is how Puppy Linux creator, Barry Kauler, posted about it in his blog:
I think that the work by Simargl is remarkable and admirable, but the forum is not quite the right one.
I am not going to post more about this. I just hope happy ending...and soon.

I hope that the discussion would continue around Puppy Linux in this forum also.I was reading recently about how the Arch Linux guys run a very "tight ship" on their forum. In contrast, the Puppy Forum is a "free for all", and distros only vaguely Puppy-like have threads.

AlphaOS is based on Woof, right? I would say that that makes it is a Puppy flavor although it "does not look" like a Puppy.pemasu wrote:I hope that the discussion would continue around Puppy Linux in this forum also.
Then I am afraid I miss the meaning in BarryK's blog entry where it says that the Puppy Forum is free for all.pemasu wrote:I think that the work by Simargl is remarkable and admirable, but the forum is not quite the right one.
If it is free for all I don't know why some want simargl and his projects to leave.
Barry K. is one and only wizard in Puppy linux world, if you don't believe me - take a look at init script inside initrd.gz, I can just
imagine time needed to write all of that and to offer user so many choices (pupmodes). Scooby's post was just a joke, a bit harsh maybe.
Anyway this thread is turning into something it shouldn't, so please let's stick to the subject.
