No internet connection when security activated
No internet connection when security activated
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to configure a wifi connection with wary puppy 5.3. Unfortunately, i'm experiencing problems when my box is protected by a WEP (or any other kind) key.
I'm using an Hercules wifi device and it seems puppy recognizes it (wlan0).
Next I scan for networks and find mine among others without any problems.
Then I configure the wireless setting (SSID, type of key, key..etc), save it, load it and click 'use this profile'.
After the wizard configured and tested wlan0, the report says that :
'Unable toconnect to a wireless network'.
However, when desactivating any kind of security on my box (open connection), its works fine and I get an internet connection easily.
Thanks in advance for any idea that could help me !

I guess this: you have to open your router's admin page in browser and to see what protection you have set in it. You must choose the same protection (wep, wpa, wpa2...) as the router has been set and you must provide the key-password for it. Probably you did not set the modem-router to use a protected wireless.
Try this: connect by eth to a modem-router of your choice, open the browser and put as address:
Press enter. If this does not open the administrator page of the modem-router search google for the correct address of your modem-router or read it in its manual. If the modem-router has a password set for admin tasks you can restore it to factory defaults without password. When you have success to access to the admin page of your modem-router you can establish the protection of wireless as desired. Only at this stage you can try to connect your puppy knowing the correct wireless protection system of your modem-router.

Are you doing all the steps shown here and in the order shown?

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thanks for your answers,
@Galbi : Yes I saved and loaded it before using the profile. In fact it was indicated in the howto bigpup linked below your own message.
@bigpup : As I said, I checked this link before and according to me, I followed every steps...
I'll continue trying solutions keeping you posted.

In the setup process, what happens when you click on Auto DHCP?

Use Frisbee.
" I have combined the 2 pets mentioned above into a single pet and whilst doing so have made the following small changes:
- changed the xpupsay image
- replaced the in-built ipinfo with a call to the system's ipinfo
I've tested it on wary5.3, racy5.3 and precise5.3.95 - i.e. all BarryK puppies that don't come with Frisbee OOTB.
[EDIT] Version 1 works on all of wary/racy/precise - Version 2 which is smaller uses the wpa_supplicant built into Precise and works on Precise only.
[EDIT 2]Slightly amended Version 2 for Precise uploaded 140912 following feedback.
[EDIT 3]Also tested on Wary5.4Beta and Racy5.4Beta 280912
Cheers peebee"
2/3rds down the page are the frisbee pets for Wary.

Otherwise try an earlier Lucid, Slacko or Dpup Squeeze here

If this reports success, your network connection should be working.Louveim wrote: @bigpup : When I click on 'AutoDHCP', it configures something I didn't really looked what but it finally reports a success..
Is it?
To report successful, it would have to establish a good working connection.
This is the last step in setup.
After that is save configuration for next boot and select done.

That is what intrigues me The report of auto_DHCP is indeed sucessful !
Anyway I managed to connect my PC using Frisbee. That solved my problem, but it do not give the solution...
I'd like to sort this out but now the default software for managing network settings seems to be Frisbee..
Do you know how to use the former software (I don't remember its name) ?
Thanks everyone for your anwers and advices !

Network Wizard is the other program.
For what ever reason, some hardware likes Frisbee and not the Network Wizard.
You can get to the Network Wizard by running the Internet Connection Wizard.
Menu->Setup->Internet Connection Wizard
After selecting Connect to internet by: wired or wireless LAN, a window will open giving options for what program to use to setup connection.
Select Network Wizard.
For wireless setup with the Network Wizard, it is important that you follow the steps in the exact order, as shown in this guide.

A common error, before saving the profile, make sure to enter the shared key (password) after selecting type of encryption used.
Also, make sure your new saved profile is the one you have selected, in the drop-down window, when you click on load.
