hi bruiser,

i've just tried the steam.pet on a vanilla slacko 5.6 with just the devx installed and it worked fine, so not sure what the problem is.

i suggest booting live.... installing the devx and seeing if it works then

No luck so far. I installed devx_slacko_5.6.0.sfs via SFS Manager. That the right way to install the devx?
I can work through trying to add the missing libraries the hard way, I was just looking for any better answers.
Thanks for the help so far.

hi bruiser,

there shouldn't be any missing library's ... steam should just work with the devx installed. did you try booting live (without a savefile)?

I figured out my problem. I had installed Puppy from a live USB, and was accidentally installing steam to the USB, and not the HD. I unplugged USB, and tried again, success. Sometimes it's the simplest things...

Installed Steam on Precise 5.7.1., devx sfs loaded, no problem. However, it does not update, and is saying there is a network error, when there is not.

hi solo,

i,ve just tried stream on a fresh install and initially got the same error as you .... however it then continued and updated fine ..... i don't think it's a firewall issue (unless you've messed with the basic puppy firewall setup?) as i eventually it updated successfully with and without the firewall on.

i think it maybe something to do with the steam server side of things.

try again and see what happens ..... but this time try running /usr/bin/steamalsa in a terminal

cheers

Thank you for responding 666philb.

I did as you suggested, but unfortunately, the problem persists. I would agree that this could be a problem with the Steam server, because initial contact is being made, downloading does commence, but then suddenly contact with the server is being cut off.

Perhaps updating will succeed at a time when all gamers are exhausted. Like 5 o'clock in the morning.

I am unable to get FEZ to work

#27 Post by YoutIndia »

I installed this on my frugal install of the Puppy Precise 5.7.1 and I even got a game called "Plan" to work without problems.

So, then I went on to dowload and install FEZ which I recently bought on the HumbleBundle. It downloaded and installed perfectly without problems.

But when I opened it then it loaded the credits logo and just closed itself. I don't know what is happening.
ght be
So I want to ask two things :

1. Do you guys have any idea on what might be wrong that is causing the problem?

2. Do you guys know where Steam stores it's executable files so that I can run it manually on the Terminal and post the output of the terminal here so that we can get to know that what is wrong / causing problem.

Edit : I forgot to mention that my laptop is having an Intel Core2Duo CPU with the inbuilt Intel graphics, so I don't believe that it is a driver problem since Intel never has any problems with Linux.

Edit 2 : I also installed Swapper and it is also showing exactly similar behavior. I guess something is wrong with my Operating System itself or maybe the Steam client.

Thanks.

hi YoutIndia

i believe the binaries are in the hidden /root/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps

however they may (or may not) need to be run in a certain way using steam .... if you've created a desktop file for the game using steam it appears in /root/Desktop ... open it as text and look at the exec line .. example ...

Code: Select all

steam steam://rungameid/218090
or maybe just

Code: Select all

steam /path/to/binary

These are the error that I get when I try to run executables

#29 Post by YoutIndia »

So, I mentioned earlier that I was not able to run the games and then crashed. The same is happening again, just as expected. But now since I am running the executable from the Terminal hence I know the output which I would like to share.

Note : The Puppy Terminal does not allow Copy and Paste and I did not had time to make output log files hence I am posting the images of the Terminal Window. I hope you won't mind it. You can use OCR is needed.

FEZ :

Swapper :

I hope that you would be able to spot the problem and tell me how to solve these problems.

Edit : Another thing, this has nothing to do with steam but I thought that you might know something. I just downloaded Trine's executable from Humblebundle store but when I run it then it says that unable to run under root. Is there any way that I can run that executable under "not root" to make it work.

Thanks.

hi YoutIndia,

the screenshots indicate that you need to run the programs with steam to get a propper error output ...i.e.

Code: Select all

steam /path/to/fez
and then post the results here.

as for trine ....

this script may work, right click in a window then choose 'new' then 'script' . then open the script as text and paste this in...then save.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
if [ -f /usr/bin/bbe ];then
if [ -f "$@" ];then
bbe -e 's/geteuid/getppid/' "$@" > /tmp/antiroot-temp1
mv -f /tmp/antiroot-temp1 "$@"
chmod 755 "$@"
   fi
  fi
then drag and drop the 'trine' installer onto the script (make a copy of trine first!)
now try the installer again.
this method which edits the' root check' out of the binary works for some programs, vlc for instance.

if that doesn't work maybe try this http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72667
install the pet and then open /usr/bin/puppy-chrome in geany and point it at trine instead of chrome

Okay, so this is the whole Steam Log here

#31 Post by YoutIndia »

So, I started the game just the way you told me to, but it didn't launched the game itself which I was expecting it to.

Anyways I went to my installed games and launched FEZ, it worked the same way that it did earlier, showed me the developer's logo and then stopped working.

Then I opened up The Swapper and it worked the same way as it did before. Anyways I have the whole log here at http://paste.ubuntu.com/7044319/ for you to see and review it.

Code: Select all

http://paste.ubuntu.com/7044319/
Anyways when launching the executable directly then it also opens up the same way. It shows me the developer logo and then just quits, so I believe it has something to do with that executable and not steam. But surely I can be wrong since I don't know a lot about this stuff. So I will not draw any conclusions from this, at least not for now.

Will give the Trine trick a try and would let you know about that.

Update 1 : The script did not work :( . Trying other methods now.

Update 2 : The second work around didn't worked either. It still shows the same error. I edited the /usr/bin/puppy-chrome to the one showed below but it didn't worked either. You got any other way?

Code: Select all

# cat /usr/bin/puppy-chrome
#!/bin/sh

LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libpuppygc.so" /initrd/mnt/dev_save/Downloads/TrineUpdate4.32.run

# puppy-chrome

Update 3 : I got Monaco : What's Yours Is Mine to work without problems. Downloading Beatbuddy: Tale Of Guardians currently. Would let you know if it works or not.

Update 4 : Beatbuddy: Tale Of Guardians works fine, no AA but still just works. I also tried Guacamelee! Gold Edition and it outright failed.
