Whats this devx you mentioned and where do I get it? It won't work with a regular python pet?

I'm using a full install of precise 5.7.1 btw.

hi Mr. Hughes

you can get the devx here http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributio ... ise-5.7.1/
don't install a python.pet unless it's specifically for precise!

you might also be interested in quickpet for precise .... in my sig below

Awesome thanks, now i'll see if I can get it to work.

EDIT: Its working great ! :D I found a python 2.7 .pet that I installed so I didn't need the .devx afterall.

I used the python .pet in this thread
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76984
python-2.7.2-i486.pet

I looked inside the pet before I installed it to make sure it was compatible with precise.

Thanks a bunch : )

Well steam itself is working great... but when I try to launch a game it says please install S3TC texture support. My ATI graphics drivers are installed and working. It says that S3TC is an OpenGL extension.

I'll do some digging and see if I can find anything.

EDIT: Ok guys I fixed it :D If anyone is having S3TC problems its because you need to install this package:

libtxc-dxtn0_1.0.1-0.3ubuntu0sarvatt_i386.deb

If anyone has any suggestions It would be much appreciated.
After installing steam pet and devx with a fresh frugal install,
Steam has downloaded updates and told me that I needed to reinstall and that I am missing 32 bit dependencies.
I would install the 32 bit dependencies but i do not know if this will help. I also heard that doing a steam --reset would help but it didnt.
So, should I try installing the 32 bit dependencies or is there a better way.

sorry for the late reply, i've been away.

i've just tried steam on a vanilla precise and it worked for me.

if you're running as fido or spot that may be causing the problem
or if you have installed puppy on a non linux partiton e.g.fat32 and then chose to move steam to /mnt/home when prompted by the installer.... that may also be the problem

Steam works great now. Thank you. :)
I got rid of the fat 32 partition and installed a linux partition like you suggested.
The only problem I am having with the frugal install is that steam says i have only 1 gig of free space on my puppy save file when there is showing 3.9 gigs free space.
I guess that means i need to insert a sd memory card with a linux partition and save my steam games on that. There was an earlier post that said they added a 32 gig sd card to a puppy installed on a usb stick. So hopefully STEAM will let me save some bigger games .

hi openocean555

steam installs its games to /root/.local/share/steam which is inside the savefile.

you can move the the steam folder to a linux partition (harddrive, sdcard whatever) and then symlink it back.

'drag and drop' /root/.local/share/steam to a linux partiton and choose 'move'
then 'drag and drop' it back to /root/.local/share/ and choose 'link relative'

but if you need it it's in quickpet on the useful pets tab (steam is also in quickpet)

runs on my inbuilt amd graphics ...

when you installed it and it asked you if you wanted to move it .... did you answer yes or no?

if you answered yes ....what partition type is your puppy on? ext3, ext4, ntfs, fat?
if you answered no ... do you have a save file or save folder?

i need to update the install message as it's a bit confusing!!

click the home/file icon top left.... then click the 'eye' to show hidden files and look in /.local/share. there should be a steam folder symlink. (if it's a triangle with red writing let me know)

try running it in a terminal

Code: Select all

steam

I have figured out what the problem was, low ram since i only have 2gb of memory, it starts to update when running on a live usb, but then ram is used up and so it closes steam.
I tried to do a full install to solve the ram prob and now am facing a new issue, i get kernel panics everytime i try boot from hd when a full install is performed.
If i try a Frugal install, i have about 1gb ram left but steam doesnt run, for some unknown reason to me.
