Works wonderfully on Asus X101CH netbook

youtube HD is no longer choppy, thanks to working graphic driver. Resume after suspend no longer hangs. The full hardware potential of my little machine is finally unleashed.

fwiw, X101CH was a piece of junk prior to upup-raring, because no working graphic driver on linux. Win7 besides being slow, freezes sporadically

X101CH is now my machine of choice when I need a machine which is ultra portable and fanless.

I just have to write something to express my gratitude to upup-raring ringtail developers.

I wonder if the cedartrail developer realize the value proposition they could have had if they released enough technical info for something like upup-raring to be developed 2 years earlier? and are they going to continue to let microsoft to screw them up in the future? just like microsoft screwed nokia up. or is there something I am not understanding about business strategies of these large corporations?

Thanks again

Hi pemasu,

I'd like to remove Firefox from this Raring and do it cleanly. There was a discussion about removing Seamonkey some time ago, but I can't find it.

Thank you in advance.

I'd like to remove Firefox from this Raring
Don't forget to change the default apps.

They are located in /usr/loca/bin/default***

You just have to change the execute line.

I have briefly tested latest woof and compiled non-PAE 3.9.8 kernel. I created Upup Raring 3.9.8.

This one is result of couple of rainy days, when there wasnt much to do outside. Now....I will be really busy with activities next 3 days at last. I am in the safety boat in the lake in canoe championship race. I will spend next days around the lake following canoes. So....I will open new thread for Upup Raring 3.9.8 with appropriate announcement info when I have time. Maybe this evening or.....

But...if there are hasty people, they can check the build before I announce it properly. There are some changes since my previous Upup Raring build. Updates, changed applications, well....features from new woof and changed kernel.

I have spent also my samsung android smartphone mobile bandwith usage limit. I bought more.... but, it seems that using smartphone as wifi router has its limitations. Of course this need is temporary due to my vacation and summer cottage situation.

This post and distro upload has been done with my mother Huawei 3g modem, so support for 3g modems has been tested.

I will provide link for kernel source sfs later also.

Has to be something to do with the newer kernels.....both Barry's latest Raring and yours are very slow....takes forever when clicking on a directory to have the contents displayed.

Video is so distorted with bad characters/missing characters that one cand not really tell what's going on.

I suspect the newer kernels simply don't work with my motherboard and inbuilt chips.

I will not post the details...they've been posted numerous times in Barry's Raring thread. If you think it would help, I'll PM information to you, rather than clutter the forum.

Not much time but zero problems with Raring 3.9.8 so far on the Athlon XP box.
Had to add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line but otherwise everything working well ootb. Much, much faster than Barry K's latest Raring...at least on this box.

Hi Pemasu

Great stuff - all working well for me on my HP550 laptop - none of the problems I experienced with BarryK's Puppy Raring - but I guess that's because you haven't made the "under-the-hood" changes like replacing udev with eudev that are in Puppy Raring.....

The "built-in" Broadcom wl driver is working fine with Frisbee....

Chromium 28 is working OOTB.....

LxPup by SFSis working well - which means that pup-volume-monitor is working correctly

Many thanks
Cheers!

Just back briefly. Thanks guys of the feedback.
Tlchost. You should create pdiag tarball and post it here as attachment. In console: pdiag

Peebee. Yeah. I have gone with proven formula. Udev-167, module-init-tools, no kmod package, no eudev. My kernels have had devtmpfs for eudev readiness enabled for sometime. So...if someone wants to be really adventurous, just swap that stuff from Barrys Raring Puppy and delete all udev and module-init-tools stuff and try to improve it. I will let it mature for now as long as old ways is good enough.

I read about the feedback from Raring Puppy thread, and I decided to stay with good old methods.

Catalyst 13.4 freezes. Crapped from the savefile afterwards, from the xorg log:
fglrx(0): Failed to open CMMQS connection.

Seems to be known problem with this catalyst driver and recent kernels.

I downgraded to the Catalyst 13.1. Maybe newer would have been ok, but 13.1 worked with 3.8.7 kernel so....

I patched the source again, compiled, petted, installed and rebooted with savefile creation. Yes ! Works really great.

Catalyst 13.1 is ati-amd fglrx driver for newer graphics. Legacy need to wait for awhile.

Download link for ati-amd catalyst driver k3.9.8 not for older 3.8.7.
I really need to create new thread.

http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/pet_pack ... modern.pet

Right click the ppower - lightning symbol - icon in tray > hardware control > PowerTop. Or in console: powertop.

You can check the watt consumption in your laptop - netbook. Also you can somewhat tune the consumption with ready made options.
I get with Radeon driver about 24-26 watts with basic usage. With Catalyst it is only 15-16 watts, almost as less than with my integrated intel graphics in my dual graphics laptop. I do like Catalyst now. Catalyst also wakes up from suspend nicely.

We'll see..

I tend to think the kernel devs fixed your bug because remember you had it with ThinSlacko with 3.9 series kernel.

More on this later in another thread

3.98 version of the intel graphics card does not automatically enter x window you want to configure, and then have to reboot to enter the X Window

You're right - and your memory is much better than mine  - great news if my problems were indeed kernel related and have now been fixed.....

Testing Upup Raring 3.9.8.

#363 Post by ETP »

Hi Pemasu,

A quick test, using a manual frugal install to a fat 32 USB2 stick revealed two issues:

1. Using a Nvidia GeForce 210 there is no Open GL support or hardware acceleration with the Nouveau driver.
I did install XBMC 12.2 but that did not work as it requires these. I suspect a KMS compile issue.

2. Gparted failed to launch but installing a statically linked pet as below fixed that.

The pets I installed were as follows; the last two being unsuccessful attempts to get the rendering working.
  • tempiconsvg-0.19-i486|tray temperature monitor
xbmc-12.2_frodo|This session will start XBMC Media Center
    video-info-glx-1.5.1-noarch|OpenGL Graphics/CPU Report
gparted-0.14.1-patched_exfat_f2fs-i486|GParted partition manager. gtkmm linked statically, so pkgs not required.
    nouveau-firmware_20091212|Firmware for nVidia graphics cards
libkms1_2.4.43|Userspace interface to kernel DRM buffer management

Thanks ETP.
I had wrong gparted pet. Fixed now.
About nouveu kernel driver. There isnt anymore non-KMS choices. All the kernel drm drivers are KMS ie kernel modesetting drivers. There is no kernel compile time options. You include nouveau drm module or not. Nothing else.

I think the problem arises from somewhere else. Maybe the kms support is defective. What does xorg log or dmesg tell you. Is there any errors, warnings which could tell what is the problem.
