Hey Everyone,
I can't do a proper shutdown on my desktop computer.
When I try it just goes to a black screen and says reboot shutdown and can't do anything with it except hard shutdown with front power switch.
Can only be shutdown using power switch on front of computer.
It will however do a normal restart from the GUI when requested.
Clean frugal install of Puppy tahrpup64 6.0.5.
This computer works fine with all 32 bit Linux distros that I have installed on it.
However for some reason it just seems to not like any 64 bit Linux distro that I have installed on it.
I want to use Puppy tahrpup64 6.0.5 because I use to run Puppy tahrpup32 6.0.5 and it worked perfectly on it.
I'm hoping that there is a fix for this issue.
Thanks.
The PoorGuy

Try adding reboot=bios or reboot=pci as a boot parameter, eg:
(grub4dos)
There are other options to try if these don't work, see this:
Freeze during restart
(grub4dos)
Code: Select all
title Tahr 6.0.5 no PAE
uuid ec7ef6c6-339c-48a9-b946-ef77f368b019
kernel /tahr/vmlinuz psubdir=tahr pmedia=atahd reboot=bios
initrd /tahr/initrd.gz
Freeze during restart
Hey Keef,
Thanks for the input but still no luck. I'm beginning to believe that 64 bit and this particular desktop just isn't going to ever be possible.
I've tried so many things that have been suggested and no good results.
In the 1.5 years of learning and using Linux I have discovered that certain hardware regardless of the fact that it suppose to support 64 bit just will not work right.
Certain hardware and Linux just isn't compatible and I think this is the case with this desktop as it hates any 64 bit OS Linux or Windows.
I'm going back to 32 bit Puppy Tahrpup as it runs great on this desktop and it all 100% works right out of the box which is what I want. I also have other desktops that run 64 bit Puppy Tahrpup perfectly.
Thanks again for your help.

Shutdown
Hi
Just a thought. Your board is about the vintage when 64 bit came in and your bios has had a number of updates since then; the latest in 2009. You might like to update the bios to see if that affects your shutdown issue. I use a lot of old hardware and have in the last 6 months updated the bioses on them. It was timely since on one I found that the manufactures were stopping support meaning that if I had not done it then it would have been too late a month or two later.
Regards

Hi peterw,
Yeah I've wondered about that and also wonder if I can do it through Linux.
I've flashed bios years ago using a floppy disc drive and it was a real PIA.
Guess I have to see what is available on Intel website. What I'm amazed at it I have older computers that have older bios and they run 64 bit flawless.
Thanks for the input.

shutdown possible solution
Hi
There is no guarantee that a bios update will cure your problem, but if it were me I would give it a try. Having done about 4/5 I found it was not as bad as I feared and would not hesitate to do it again. Most boards have features which stop you making a complete mess of them. I am not sure what would happen if you had a power failure during the process. The web addresses for intel are:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/produc ... ard-DG33BU

Best of luck

Hey peterw,
SUCCESS! It worked.
It now shuts down the way it suppose to.
Man bios flashing has sure changed since the last one I did. I downloaded an ISO and used Pburn and didn't hesitate and here I am.
I always wondered if that could be the problem and now I know. We used to only update bios when we had major system problems where the bios was known to be the problem.
I sure Thank You for the encouragement.

Hi
Glad it worked and I could be of some assistance. You now have many more options of linux distributions you can try.

Hi peterw,
Yes it does give more options and I to am glad it worked as everything seems to be going the way of 64 bit.
The distros I run are Ubuntu 14.04 / Ubuntu Mate 16.04 / antix 15.1 / antix MX-15 / Puppy Tahrpup32 / Puppy tahrpup64.
Pretty much like those and really like the Puppies that I use as I like the simplicity of Puppies GUI and the major fact that it does everything I need to do.
I to use a lot of older computers that are discarded by others and another + for Puppy.
This is one my neighbor was going to throw away.
