ThinSlacko

This is Slacko designed for slightly older kit. It should run fine on a PIII 600MHz with 256MB RAM, or even lower specs. Flies on fast kit.

Get it from here

All you need is at that link, ISO, devx, kernel source, checksums, supplementary adrive [with Opera, ffmpeg-8.4-i486, Pmusic and Pburn] plus kernel pet and supplementary pets (these are included in builds, only to be used for woofing).

Features
  • Adrive aware, not included in iso
  • optimised for pentium III cpu, should be ok on k6 (AMD), NO PAE
  • minimal programs, only links browser and most of the basic puppy gtkdialog gui
  • 2 iso images, one XZ compressed (122MB), the other GZ compressed (145MB)
  • f2fs capability, with installer for USB drives
Deltas for newer version are available on page 4, XZ only

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite load in all cases in under 256 MB RAM, but it will run fine with that but occasionally pulls files from the CD. It wont pull from the CD though if you have swap. It's near impossible to remove mesa (the source of the bloat in recent pups @ ~30MB compressed) and still support the majority of hardware.

There is a script called "build-iso" at the link. You can read the README for PHATSlacko, plus there is a script unpack_pkgs2sfs to help with building Adrives from pets and tgz/txz slackware packages.

If you have PHATSlacko, you could probably use that Adrive in place of the original.

Have a Happy Easter Sunday Funday!

Yeah, should have put it as a "known issue" , not a showstopper though!. It straightens up if res is less than 1280 (X axis). I'm guessing most "old" kit is hooked up to "old" monitors so I didn't bother with it.

OK, But you got so many other irons in the fire.... I've already blew past my UNLIMITED download cap-speed before the other download by about 8Gb and I still got 20 hours left this month/today! Not sure how much they are trying to drop my connect but with wget Meh, the computer just keeps trying

I might have one (in XOfied THINslacko  ).
Installing a Slackware package with PPM (tried DSL), shows the process as finished but never downloads and installs.
I'll check with the original to verify

It can't really be chopped any more and still support near everything.. (opera is in the adrive.. tempted? ..and I nearly went with GOaB wall)

@mavrothal, I tested syslinux-4.0.5 from slackware before I posted the isos.. it's integral to extra functionality in the f2fs-installer

Tried it in "normal" ThinSlacko. sdl-1.2.14, SDL-pango, SDL_gfx are doing this. Other not. Interestingly trying to install assaultcube downloads and installs dsl-1.2.14 (a dependency) twice!
I'll check PHAT. Maybe is something with the repos or PPM.

Yep. Also true in PHAT.
What is "interesting" is how it fools PPM to think that everything is OK. Requires some digging I guess.

Latter No time to check them myself today but I added

Code: Select all

set -x
NAME="`basename $0`"
exec 2>/tmp/petgetlog/"$NAME".log
in all the /usr/local/petget scripts, "installed" dsl-1.2.14 with PPM and I attach the /tmp/petgetlog folder here

The context of "Slim" predicates the removal of loads without inviting groans from those who wish for more (as well as those imbued with poor reading and comprehension skills!)
Some basic utilities to setup, text editor, a browser and a PPM is all that's needed to get started? Music, video, SIP and all that are legitimate add-ins, perhaps with your inspired recommendations with locations and other advice in a simple text file? Of course - one still has to grapple with getting a picture on the screen...

Wood/trees, horses/courses.

Oh, and Happy Eastertide whatever your denomination or none.

NM10

On Intel NM10 laptop with 1024x600 screen, direct rendering works at 175 fps (glxgears). However, xorgwizard has to be commanded at first boot to get into X (same with PHATslacko).

Did not see VLC, so installed it via PPM/puppy-slacko14 together with ffmpeg. When playing video full-screen, load gets to as high as 85% CPU utilization (only 75% in PHATlacko).

Had to reboot 2x to use adrv (is this correct?).

Thanks, Micko.

I did a manual frugal install to a 4gb flash drive.
video-info-glx 1.5.1 Sun 31 Mar 2013 on ThinSlacko Puppy 5.5.01
Linux 3.8.5.0 i686
0.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV530 [Radeon X1600]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RV530 01.00
X Server: Xorg Driver: radeon
X.Org version: 1.12.3
dimensions: 1440x900 pixels (380x238 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+
Core 0: @1800 MHz

This pc has no shortage of memory but I wanted to compare with PHATSlacko,
it does run faster I think.
I installed Chromium from ppm and some slacko pets that I have on a
flash drive.

Are there any special considerations to installing the GZ iso? I just did my usual frugal, copying across the sfs, vmlinuz and initrd.gz but it "boots" into a very weird and unusable (but very pretty) kaleidoscope of cyan / white / speckly lines and smudges all over the screen. Had to use hard power off to clear.

This is a Toshiba TE2100 lappy with 2ghz and 512MB and with nvidia GeForce4 420 Go video card (which usually has no trouble running any puppy, including the previous THINslacko - although most of my puppies do not run any acceleration)

md5 checks out.

Will try on a couple of other machines as I really want to use thinSlacko as a base for remastering a special purpose puppy.

try:

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram nouveau,noaccel=1
failing that:

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram nouveau,modeset=0

Let us know

Did the sfs load ok in pfix=ram? (I saw your failure in PHAT)
Thanks for the drivers!
