I've installed the Java JRE from Java.com; it's now residing in /usr/java/jre1.7.0_17, but what I can't figure out is how to get the browser plugin working.
I've already got ~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so symlinked to /usr/java/jre1.7.0_17/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so, but restarting the browser does nothing.
The plugin appears to be nonfunctioning in Firefox, as well.

The Java plugin might be disabled by default within the browser. Did you check your browser settings?
