TahrPup vs SlackoPup

#1 Post by DallasCHVN »

I'm currently running TahrPup 6.0.1, but I'm wondering if SlackoPup 5.7 is better. What do you think?

It depends on any number of things, including (but not limited to) --

-- if you have an application that needs compatibility with one or the other
-- which one performs better on your hardware
-- look and feel, i.e. which one you personally find aesthetically more pleasing
-- etc.

Ultimately, the best way to determine which Pup, of a given set, is best for you -- is to try them all and see which one you like / enjoy using the most.

Hi, DallasCHVN.

I was going to reply that your question was futile, but then I remembered:

You need a separate graphics card (even an old Radeon AGP card will do)
to get complete graphics capabilities in TahrPup. Otherwise, you may get
a 1280x1024 screen resolution but the maximum you'll be able to
maximize a program window to will be 1024x768 pixels.

My understanding is that it's not TahrPup's fault, certainly not 666philb's
fault (TahrPup's author). It's higher in the Ubuntu chain: the Ubuntu
people have been toying with a new X or something, and that's not up to
snuff yet.

Whereas graphics in Slacko-5.7.1 & Slacko-6.0b are ok ex-factory.

That's the only real difference that I can see. Some of the softwares
offered are different, you may prefer one over the other. But that is the
prerogative of the individual author, it doesn't make one Puppy better
than the other. Both authors are extremely talented and capable.

BFN.

Tahrpup is now at version 6.0.3 if you do the updates.

Click on Quickpet icon on desktop.
Quickpet->Info->Tahrpup bug fixes or tahrpup updates.

After all the bug fixes are installed, good idea to reboot so they all get saved.

Now start the Puppy Package Manager(PPM)
Should be offered the 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 service packs.
Install them.
Reboot.

Should now be totally updated to the date you did this.

You do not tell the specs of your computer.

That is a factor, sometimes.

If it runs Tahrpup it will probably run Slacko OK.

Tahrpup uses Ubuntu based program packages.

Slacko uses Slackware based packages.

Tahrpup is a little better at support for newer hardware.
Rreally depends on what the hardware is.

Ah, thanks for reminding me, bigpup.

Another thing about TahrPup:
speaking of downloads, its PPM is all screwed up. I tried I don't know how
many times to update the depots in its PPM, but the result has always
been the same for me: forget this PPM, go to pckgs.org and install needed
stuff manually.

Hello, 666philb.

The PPM doesn't work and never has.

It has a pupsave size check that never ends with an ok. Therefore it
never installs anything.

At other times, it feels as though there is a bouncer at the ubuntu depots
never letting any Puppy in. (The file appears in the list, but you can never
download it.)

Totally frustrating. Luckily there is pkgs.org.

Bye for now.

musher0,

Have you updated Tahrpup to V6.0.3 using the Quickpet->Info->Tahrpup updates?
PPM got a lot of updating from Tahrpup V 6,0 to V 6.0.3.

It was during the big update changes and improvements to PPM, and PPM in Tahrpup needed those updates.

Thanks bigpup.

Can we not download a "ready-made, already-patched" TahrPup-6.0.3 iso
from somewhere? It would be much simpler, I think.

Call it the scalded cat syndrome: if the PPM in previous versions of TahrPup
is not working properly, why would the QuickPet work properly? (Sorry for
being so frank.)

666philb has to make that happen.
At present the latest Tahrpup iso is version 6.0.2

Quickpet and PPM are different programs.

Does your version of PPM show as V2?

the platform machine makes a ton of difference.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55T laptop with Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N2820 @ 2.13GHz that Tahrpup (6.0, 6.02 & 6.03) runs at 1800 Mhz max (no frequency settings available) and it always resets to powersave on (re)boot.
Slacko 5.7 will max at 2.36Ghz, will run ondemand or performance (any frequency settings) consistantly on (re)boot.
(Vivid 6.5 - 4.0.1 kernel behaves like Tahrpup)

Tahrpup (6.0, 6.02 & 6.03) with Firefox (many versions to 30 to 40) can only run for about an hour or so before freezing machine. Requires hard power off.

Slacko 5.7 with Firefox versions from 17 to 40) appears stable. Online upto 14 hours at a time without problems. Ditto with Windows (8.1)

While I like Tahrpup, my computer has a problem with it.
BTW, I have had no problems with PPM in any of the Tahrpups (once I updated, shutdown and restarted -not just a reboot)

Tahr Pup (like newer pups) doesn't work on my computer.

#14 Post by myke »

Ever since the new auto-detection of video on first boot, none of the puppies have worked well. I think it is due to the combo of a Radeon clone graphics card and my monitor. I tried a Philips monitor and that worked for a while. Then one day it blew and had no picture. Now I am using a Benq monitor, which I I have tio use in vesa mode. I have connected it as a VGA monitor.

I arrive here through diaspora (discovered to day)
Tharpup and Slacko and Dpup. Vs is not good.
Sure access to Ubuntu Lucid was a great progress.
But Ubuntu developers were developing for personal computers, in this time. They are changed oF functions by Canonical to develop for phones or tablets.
Main repository is getting smaller and smaller (stuff is then taken in charge by 'Ubuntu enthusiasts' as 'Puppy enthusiasts ' make pets).
Universe and Multiverse are still rich in applications.
About slacko newest philosophy, i would tell the problem is not that an application is recent or Old, the problem is available or not..
Users don't know how to compile, root sometimes know. Downloading from the PPM more and more often is not enough.
Me, pelo, i don't even ask for an application, i ask for a functiun.
Slacko, tahr, dpup, puppy 4.2.1 is not my deal.
I want to get something, fast and easy for my human kernel. that was the reason why i adopted Puppy and trash Ubuntu, Porteus, and windows (not trashed because paid)

I adopted Tahrpup since i changed my netbook and Intel Atom N270 is unable to run 64 bit OS (my current Olidata OX is older than my previous Compaq Mini). All is OK except Intel graphics and touchpad support, because first one is buggy with Opera (Mesalib to be accurate) and second has no solution since driver is now in kernel instead of a separate module (Sentelic driver).

Slacko64 works OOTB, but as Tahrpup has a buggy driver, this time for Radeon cards (Mesalib is terribly old and even worse is trying to compile a fglrx module to use propertiary driver).

I gave up trying to compile a newer Mesa, even it's own version is impossible to compile (9.1.7). However, i had less package issues than Tahrpup despite lack of support.

I'm running the 64bit TahrPup and it works well on my old Dell E521.
Can't get the Nvidia 352.79 driver to work but I believe that is due to the old NVIDIA C51 [GeForce 6150 LE] integrated graphics adapter. The nouveau driver is working excellent so no complaints. The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ and this thing flies.

Puppy 64 TahrPup no complaints.
BitMeter & pmcputemp are both excellent and must have tools.

Thanks.
Life is Good.

Apples to Oranges

#18 Post by mikeslr »

Hi All,

Personally, i prefer the taste of oranges to that of apples. But I am now diabetic and have to avoid foods which are high-glycemic --quickly dissolve sugar into my blood stream.

Every computer has a motherboard, a CPU, and chips to interface between them and such peripherals as keyboards, monitors, various ports for attaching external devices. I estimate that your computer is one mixture of over 600,000 possible mixtures of the components available.

The primary purpose of any computer is to run the software which will enable each of us to accomplish some tasks. Some operating systems may provide some applications with more "bells and whistles" or which ease the work-flow in accomplishing a specific task.

That Tahrpup or Slacko may be the best operating system for my computer and my needs tells you nothing about what is best for your computer and your needs. Both Tahrpup and Slacko present a highly capable platform on which a great variety of software will run.

Why stop with Tahrpup or Slacko? Barry Kaulter --who thought up and perfected the first versions of Puppy-- still works at the 'cutting edge' providing us with innovative Quirkys. ETP modifies Barry K's products publishing Pups for special uses and with unique capabilities. James Bond and Kirk also constantly bring new methods and insights which they publish as FatDogs.

Saintless and Fredx181, have applied the design philosophy of Puppy to create DebianDogs and MintPup via debianlivecd rather than "woofing" debian binaries; while josejp2424 has woofed a Puppy from those binaries. And recently we've had a Russian entry to our kennel, Pro's PuppyRus-A, created by woofing Arch binaries.

Why stop there? One of the determining factors of whether or not we like an operating system is how conveniently we can interact with it. Peebee and rg66 have done masterful jobs in publishing Puppies which sport Openbox-Lx and Xfce as Window managers. Pcmanfm and thunar as default file-managers. [No slight intended toward Radky, vicmz or others whose work enables additional window and file managers once a Puppy is up and running. I'm just talking about those Puppies a newbee can just run, as is, OOTB].

One concept recent emigres from Windows find it hard to get their heads around is that --with one exception*-- "Puppy Linux is Free." You don't have to plunk down too much of your hard-earned "coin of the realm" for it, and be stuck with it. Rather, you download a free ISO and burn it to a CD/DVD or install it to a USB-Key or your hard-drive. If it's not what you want, download a different ISO. If it is the "greatest thing since sliced-bread", great. But you can still download another an try it out. On your computer that next Puppy might be greater than great.

Or run 2 or 5 or 10. Windows now requires three partitions. Ubuntu and the other “big boys
