XFCE on Upup Precise 382 -- hardly any icons & no wallpaper Subject description: [GAVE UP, DON'T LIKE IT AFTER ALL] Any suggestions on how to fix? |
|
So in my last thread I got a gui working on the Pico-ITX board I have, by switching to Upup Precise 382.
Now I want to try to get XFCE working.
FULL DISCLOSURE: peebee is hopefully sending me MATE 155 and I may try that and decide to keep it instead. I don't know yet!
...anyhow, here's what's going on.
I'm using jejy69's "slacko" SFS of XFCE, it works the same (for me) on Slacko and on this version of Upup -- after I added a libpng14 dotPET that I found on Barry's blog. (Sorry -- I didn't save the link, but if you search Goooooooooooooooooogle for libpng14 precise puppy it should pop right up.) Er... for clarity, I only had to add libpng14 to Upup, on Slacko I didn't need to do that.
The problem I'm having for both is this -- I can set neither icons nor wallpaper, and so I'm left with a blank blue background and at least 2/3 of the pixmaps either as "red X in a box" (broken image) or missing altogether (blank space where an icon should be). The only four icons that work at all are the three on the desktop (~root/, filesystem, and trash) and the icon for files (which is also --incorrectly-- being used for folders right now, boo hiss).
That's a problem, all right! Particularly since it looks like butt and I'm an artist and all that kind of stuff.
So how do I fix this?
EDIT: changed my own title (for once) to be more, er, precise.

Something of an update.
jejy69 says to put in the following in a particular part of /root/.xinitrc --
| Code: | CURRENTWM="`cat /etc/windowmanager/`"
if [ $CURRENTWM = "xfce4-session" ];then
/usr/sbin/delayedrun &
exec xfce4-session
fi |
In a stroke of sheer brainfartitude I had written /user/[...] instead of /usr/[...] -- WHOOPSIE!!
That's how I pronounce "usr", in my head and out loud. At least I remember to type /etc/[...] instead of /etsy/[...] or /etsee/[...] or some junk like that -- one of my professors in college taught me that it was pronounced "eht-SEE" rather than "et cetera" or "ehtss" or somesuch. The same fellow also told me that a particular desktop environment was named "GEE nohm" rather than just "nohm". (I am of course referring to GNOME.) I've no idea whether he was taking me for a trip or not, in both cases.
Anyhow... renaming /user/[...] to /usr/[...] in that entry helped a little. XFCE still is missing almost all the pixmaps, but two more have appeared which is progress I suppose.
Tried to try MATE but it did the same thing to me that it did when I tried it last -- screen flickers, I see a cursor for a split second, more flickers, then it's back to text mode with the usual "exited from X" announcement (as if I couldn't tell...). Oof.

There is Sensei Linux http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=85346 made by stifiling that uses xfce for its default deskop and it is like other Puppies only with pacman as package manager, let's be honest pacman is miles ahead of Puppies pet packages...

simargl, your creation is one of two that I will likely never use. The other is Puppy Studio.
You and l0wt3ch (the guy behind Puppy Studio) have both made some very poor decisions in the past about how to relate to people on this forum, and hurt some feelings I think. I know I did not enjoy the dustup. I'm sure you had your reasons, but I think that lashing out like that is to be avoided where possible. Guess it's how I was brought up -- my maternal grandfather (I am told -- he died before I was born) used to say "you can swing your arm as far as you want, so long as it does not touch my nose". Etc.
That's most of it. The other part of it is that I know Puppy well enough to use, and I don't know other distros hardly at all. I probably will never use sickgut's Pussy Linux for that reason -- sorry sickgut, that one is NOT your fault. I went from Ubuntu 7.xx/8.xx straight to Puppy and I've honestly never looked back. I've never needed to.
So, while I'm sure your ArchPup/AlphaOS stuff and its derivatives are very nice, they're not for me. I hope you understand.

hi starhawk,
this is an xfce sfs i've been messing around with for precise puppy.... icons work, backgrounds work, you may need to choose them in the xfce settings, it also includes the wmswitcher.
It's still experimental, but if you want to test it here's the link http://www.wuala.com/666philb/Documents/xfce4_4.8.0.3_sfs4.sfs/

Thanks! I'm about to run errands, but when I get back (won't be later than 4pm Eastern US) I should be able to download that and check it out.

to get rid of the stupid root warning in thunar use this script .... | Code: | #!/bin/sh
bbe -e 's/geteuid/getppid/' /usr/bin/Thunar > /tmp/thunar-temp1
mv -f /tmp/thunar-temp1 /usr/bin/Thunar
chmod 755 /usr/bin/Thunar |
'bbe' is a cool app that can edit binaries and libs, and is included in precise puppy. you can use it to remove the 'root check' some apps use. works a treat with vlc (barry uses it in the install script) google chrome, and other anti-root/puppy apps
i'll add the edited thunar binary to the .sfs eventually

First of Sensei Linux is not my creation - it is stifiling's work, second - my comment here was just friendly suggestion since you wanted to try Puppy system with XFCE, and in this one you get it pre installed and ready to use. My posts on this forum that "hurt some feelings" were just reactions to very rude comments for my work on Archpup, made by micko in his first post ever related to Archpup - what means I could not provoke him before. Package management system is not what defines Puppy Linux system, but that's just my opinion...
Take care.

666philb, how do I use that script? Do I just type it into a terminal, or do I make a file with that inside and then run it as a shell script? or does it go in Startup?
I don't know these things!
EDIT: also, the trash can and my USB drive don't seem to want to show up on the desktop. Boxes checked or unchecked, it matters not

Giving up on XFCE. Last time I used it (Xubuntu, a long time ago!) it was a lot more intuitive... sorry to waste folks' time...
...now if only I could get MATE to work...
