I think it is theoretically possible to fetch linux source code, modify it to send data somewhere , cross compile it to run on Windows and pack it into some Windows application.setup.exe .

Karl post very good points of efforts required to build a mission critical system for usage on the ISS. Others do too.

I have several corps I work with which run MS servers which have not been down in several years. One of them is a terminal server which has many multiples of dept using same system daily without issue.

There are ways to setup, even Windows, for mission critical work.

One aspect that is changing in the IT world which creates the tools that are in use on the ISS is the talent in the datacenter. We are seeing more and more come to the table with Unix/Linux/MS skills.

Now that SAMBA rewrite is complete and it interfaces with Linux, MS or Apple's Directory Servers, it is now easier and logical to also deploy Linux as a mission critical system where it is just as happy providing Master Server services as well as client (thin/thick) uses.

One of the most intriguing things, to me, is the co-existence of the multiple countries that have members harmoniously working together. How are they able to do that when we have so much insanity driven by politics? How and at what level are countries training people to live at that level of cooperation? And, is the personal systems at use shared with everyone on the station or are they personally isolated which would give rise to mistrust...even on the station?

And, will the station become so large at some point where it'll contain as many people as we've seen in star-trek? Will they continue harmony into the cosmos? Is this the beginning of a demonstration of mankind's ability to adapt and the carbon units ability to evolve without greed?

Stable mission critical systems for people to use, are minor efforts.

I`ve said for years that Puppy needed an API.
It does have a loosely woven one that`s undocumented.

It`s just a hobby O.S. and not focused on serious deployment.
