Hey- what happened to your dwnld here?

petget-2012041817957.tar.gz 'IS NOT' the file I linked to..

Instead, grab it from a shell with this:

Code: Select all

wget http://shino.pos.to/linux/puppy/petget-20120418.pet

I don't seem to be able to download any dotpets, getting a 'failed to install' error message after downloading.

Are you able to extract this without an error?

No? Rt-clk and open a shell >> try:

Code: Select all

tar -xzf petget-20120418.pet
Ignore the failure and confirm the existence of a new petget-20120418 folder..

Then open a shell in ~/.packages and dump the output from this line:

Code: Select all

md5sum DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS DISTRO_PET_REPOS DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS

sh-4.1# md5sum DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS DISTRO_PET_REPOS DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS

Our 'specs' files are different. What that means.. I'm not sure.

==

OK, extraction went- good. Inside your petget folder you'll find a 'usr' folder.

Inside there >> local, sbin, share. We're not gonna worry about share..

Open the systems /usr/local and position it so you can drag'n drop with the petget folders in /root.

Drag ~/petget-20120418/usr/local/petget into /usr/local.. effectively overwriting the existing folder.

With ~/petget-20120418/usr/sbin open, select the all button, second from the right in ROX and drag all three files from ~/petget-20120418/usr/sbin into /usr/sbin.

Now open PPM and try to install something.

If she still doesn't work- go into ~/.packages and rename DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS >> OLD_DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS

Slip this Luci copy in and try again..

when you say 'drag', do you mean to copy or to move?

Copy's 'always' your safest bet. Deletions come- after the fact.

Then it's purge or bust! Otherwise it's 'NOT' to anyone's benefit to continue. Besides, it's not nearly as risky as you'd imagine. No lies spoken..
*Purge* Boot Message wrote:This is a radical file cleanup for broken systems, could alter some settings. You are upgrading Puppy from x to x. Overwritten old files have been moved to /tmp/versioncleanup/. After bootup please examine this directory (before shutdown) for anything you might like to recover.
Having had a run myself I can say with certainty it won't affect what's installed, at least, everything I had time to check still worked as expected. There was NOTHING worth anything to recover. What purge will do is replace *system* items, namely the ones required for a functional base, e.g., PPM? The files copied appear to belong to BusyBox, or Pups base. Needless to say, you'll need to burn an install disk to make it happen. Grabbing the iso with wget- your best bet..

Code: Select all

wget http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/luci-001.005.iso
As for burning, use cdrecord. I'll spell it out once you confirm.. And you 'will' confirm..

Cause, understand- I'm not a quitter.. I'm in it to win it!

Whether YOU like it'er not.

Ok Semme, I'm ready to do the operation you are recommending, if you are guaranteeing that I will not lose the precious files which are stored on my hard drive?

...I'm after having numerous issues with installing dotpets, and none of them will install for me at all. :
