XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, and Windows. Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software developers have contributed to XBMC, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.

While XBMC functions very well as a standard media player application for your computer, it has been designed to be the perfect companion for your HTPC. Supporting an almost endless range of remote controls, and combined with its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, XBMC feels very natural to use from the couch and is the ideal solution for your home theater.

Currently XBMC can be used to play almost all popular audio and video formats around. It was designed for network playback, so you can stream your multimedia from anywhere in the house or directly from the internet using practically any protocol available. Use your media as-is: XBMC can play CDs and DVDs directly from the disk or image file, almost all popular archive formats from your hard drive, and even files inside ZIP and RAR archives. It will even scan all of your media and automatically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. There are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations. Once installed, your computer will become a fully functional multimedia jukebox.

Hi 666philb,

Many thanks for this excellent SFS. You did not mention which version(s) of Precise you tested it with but I decided to try it
with Upup Raring k3.8.7 and can confirm that it works superbly.

In order to get my pci DVB-T tuner working I did however have to install the following:
  • tvheadend_3.4~raring_i386.deb

    xbmc-pvr-tvheadend-hts_1.6.19-0raring_i386.deb
These can be found here:

http://apt.tvheadend.org/stable/pool/main/t/tvheadend/

Thanks once again.

Has anybody managed to install the 'Mash Up' addon to this version of XBMC?
I've spent literally hours trying.

it is not necessary, to load the whole devx package ... only python-2.7 is needed...i have packed it to a pet file : python-2.7.pet(4.3MB)

i have packed it to a pet file
This package either misses some files or is not taken from the devx 571.

The extracted Python from devx 571 is 5376 KB.

I have made such a Python SFS for the use of Openshot in Precise 571.

Just for your interest.

P4 512MB RAM + 5.7.1 Precise puppy- XBMC 12.2 SFS problems!!

#12 Post by u81 »

Hello everyone,

I'm a new user of precise puppy 5.7.1.

I have installed it on two machines, both almost 8 years old.

1- Laptop- intel centrino + 1.5gb RAM - full installation
2- Desktop- Intel P4 + 512 MB RAM - frugal installation

On the laptop the XBMC 12.2 SFS is running perfectly, but on the desktop the video is stuttering badly. In fact not only when playing a video but even the scrolling text along the bottom of the interface is stuttering.

I can't figure out what might be causing that, so all help would be appreiciated.

xbmc 11 update-

still a lot of stuttering. I may be wrong but is this because of the limited RAM?

I've setup a 2gb swap file but htop shows that it is not being use at all as in 0/2046mb.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated...
Might I add, that I've loaded the Libre Office 4.1.5 SFS and that is fine, I also loaded the devx-571 and still the stutter is there. I've also tried the other two packages, the python2.7 PET as well as the Python 2.7 SFS and the stutter is still there.

Help please........

Thanks in anticipation. Meanwhile I'll try if xbmc 11 sfs works or not. I'll post an update with the outcome.

hi u81,

that's not much ram on the p4 is that the one that's stuttering?
also if you have an amd or nvidia card, have you installed the drivers for it?

@phil666.

Thanks for the prompt response phil666.

You're right the desktop with P4 and 512mb RAM is the one that's stuttering.

Hi would appreciate if you could kindly answer the following for me:

1- I've setup a 2gb swap file but that is not being used at all. What do you think is wrong?

2- I don't know how to check the video card on this machine and xorg wizard is not showing any updates? Can you kindly tell me how to get around this or may be direct me to more info on this...

general questions:

3- Does this forum have an android app support like tapatalk?
4- Is there a thanks button to thank people who help me, as is found on most other forums?

Looking forward to your kind assistance.

Thanks.

hi u81,

to find what video card you have, you can use this http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73101

not sure why your swap isn't being used ..... maybe ask in the either the beginners or users section of the forum, as more people will see it there.

and no 'button' just saying thanks is fine on here :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have an Sis M650 video card and the xorg.conf driver "vesa".

I don't know how to go any further than this.

Any further suggestions, before I give up using xbmc on this machine.

It is quite disheartening to see a P4 not being able to run it though.

I did come across a file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf.SiS and again the driver "vesa" #card0driver is specified.

Does that make any sense to you or is that correct?

Just to update this issue further.

I went to xorg video wizard > reconstructed xorg.conf > selected sis driver > selected nothing ( to allow Xorg to guess the resolution) > test X now > Xorg determined resolution as 1280x768 and 75 Hz > clicked OK and then X started with the Sis driver but I seem to back to square one.

xbmc is still stuttering a lot and is unusable.

Help please......

Further update-

I should've probably done this before- I tried playing a youtube video with the SiS driver selected and even that played with a lot of stuttering even at 360 resolution.

I switched back to the vesa driver and the same video played the very same way.

So, I don't know what to infer- whether the card is just incapable or there is an issue with the insufficient RAM.

Although if a raspberry pi can run xbmc properly, surely a full desktop graphics card- no matter how poor- should be able to run the videos properly.

But, that may not be the case .........

So, I'll try and find a ram stick to add to this machine if one is obtainable without much expense, but, again the swap not working is another issue that boggles my mind.

help.... anyone.

after googleing your graphics card & linux, it seems that may be the problem .... quite a few posts about sis not supporting linux and the driver they do supply being very basic with no acceleration.

xbmc worked fine on my p4 although i did have 2g ram.

maybe see if you can pick up a cheap/free old nvidia card from somewhere is my advice .... although there maybe a solution for your card somewhere on the forum

I have got 2 old P4 desktops with SiS graphics cards here and they both run YouTube and other videos OK although I have not tried XBMC.

I would think that 512 MB of RAM with no working swap is something that is likely to be the cause and needs addressing before anything else, even if only to eliminate it from your enquiries so to speak. I would always create a swap partition of a Gig or two when installing Puppy to the hard disk. These are always detected and loaded automatically at boot-up, but I understand that it is not always convenient for people to be using a partitioning tool.

Because I use partitions I have little experience of swap files, but I know that you do have to activate them with the swapon command (followed by the path to the swapfile of course) and I wonder if you have done this.

Thanks Oscar.

I'll try to get more RAM for this machine first of all.

Now that you say it, I remember that the laptop also can't play youtube videos at 480 smoothly, but xbmc videos play perfectly, even youtube videos played on xbmc work really well and that's the reason I wanted to setup xbmc in the first place.

@ 666philb,- Thanks once again for your time and response. I'm not very familiar with adding a video card etc. although I'm sure it's a relatively simple process- just haven't ever needed to do that before. Will look at it right after the RAM attempt.

@ Boofoo- as if saying that I'm screwed wouldn't have been enough-- you just had to post that pic.............

2gb RAM+ P4 with SiS video card and still very choppy video

#20 Post by u81 »

update- Now I have 2gb RAM on P4 with SiS video card and still very choppy video on xbmc. Even the interface is very very choppy.

So, any other suggestions before I give up. :( :( :(

Further update-

On Winxp, the youtube videos play quite well. The 720p ones stutter a bit but no very noticeable.

And on Windows xbmc 12.3 - P4 sis651 chipset 2gb RAM- good enough as well.

So, I don't know what to do now. I'll try another distro....I guess.

Although it would be best if I could stay with puppy as I have it working perfectly with 2 machines and definitely like it, but without smooth video, I can't see myself running puppy on this machine anyway.

Thanks for the help guys. If you think of anything else, do let me know.

Do anyone have experience running the windows drivers in puppy?

Can that work?
