How to correctly start gnome-shell?

#1 Post by moogsydodong »

Hi Guys,

Im playing with Upup Raring 3.8.7 and Im trying to install gnome-shell using PPM. Seems to download all needed dependencies and all but I cant seem to make it work correctly.

I tried using a simple .xinitrc

Code: Select all

exec gnome-session
and another is

Code: Select all

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session
both will only show the gnome3 default wallpaper and my mouse cursor which I can move but nothing else. No menu, panel, or anything else.

Is this how it should be? or Am I lacking something?

If you have any idea like a better .xinitrc or any other method to make this work I'll be very happy to try it. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks
