On handling a startup freeze problem

#1 Post by artsown »

I have a old Dell Dimension 8200 that freezes up during startup
when using several pups having newer kernels. At the point of
freezeup, the screen message is "Recognising media devices...
optical input_"

I discovered that inserting "pfix=nox" in the kernel line allowed me
to work around the problem. I then get screens for keyboard
selection and time zone. I type "xorgwizard" and select and test
the (Radeon) graphics driver. Then I type "xwin" to get the GUI.

After creating a Save file, I never again experience the freezeup,
so it's then just a matter of removing the "pfix=nox" from the
kernel line to get normal operation. The pups then boot straight
to the GUI ok.

Hope this helps someone :)
