Troubles with installed gwenview and k3b

#1 Post by rolf »

Hi there. So, I installed Puppy Precise 5.4.3 to a usb key and it's working quite nicely to help me keep in online touch here on vacation in Ho Chi Minh City.

I've installed and run various programs with ppm, using the default sources, afair, like xfe, konsole, gimp, but having trouble, with similar error messages in each, running gwenview or k3b. For example, gwenview starts like this:

Image

The directory tree is bare and, if I use Open from the File menu, I see this:

Image

When I start k3b:

Image

and, when I OK that, I see this:

Image

There are no burners attached to this machine, so I haven't checked it further but gwenview doesn't work and I would expect that k3b doesn't work.

I update the sources every couple of runs of ppm. I made sure to check and install dependencies in ppm for all programs I installed. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Some kind soul will come along and solve this for you shortly but in the meantime it seems to me that it's not finding ~/Choices/Mime-Types directory for some reason.

You could try adding that directory directly to your PATH variable in "/etc/profile" then if it gets them maybe do something more permanent
Temporarily I tried to add it to the path like this in a terminal
PATH="$PATH:/Root/Choices/MIME-types/"
[which suddenly loses all commands and I am unsure why[EDIT fixed.

Perhaps open a terminal and use the "env" command and compare what you have with mine below if it helps at all

Code: Select all

If that is no typo but really &PATH it is sure why it looses commands....

Thanks for all the advices. I'm not on that installation, right now, but will try some ideas later. Question:
install the devx
What does that mean; what is devx?

hi rolf

the devx is the puppy development package ... you can get it here http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributio ... _5.4.3.sfs

once downloaded just right click on it and choose sfs-load

I did install the devx and that seems to be enough for gwenview and k3b to appear to be working.

WRT other ideas, I had tried searching on mimes and installing such programs that I did run an update-mime command, before.
I'm not inclined to fool more with it but do have some cli results to report, FWIW.

Code: Select all

# echo $PATH
/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R7/bin:/root/my-applications/bin:/usr/games
# update-mime
update-mime update-mime-database update-mime-database.real
# update-mime-database
Usage: update-mime-database.real [-hvV] MIME-DIR
# ls -l /Root/Choices/MIME-types/
ls: cannot access /Root/Choices/MIME-types/: No such file or directory
#
Thanks! :)

Code: Select all

# ls Choices
MIME-types ROX-Filer Templates URI
# ls Choices/MIME-types
terninal started from desktop is pointed at ~

Good to see you got it working . I used to use K3B in other distros a lot but I have found the one with Puppy (PBurn) has not had an error since I have been using it and its quite intuitive but I usually just do file backups to DVD , movies onto DVD's and iso expansions

For pics I use XnView ,I find it easier to handle batch files ,renaming etc. For heavy stuff I use the gimp. The gimp is available as an .sfs
and both are available through quickpet here

Here, anyway, ~ is /root, not /Root.
