Suspend shuts down X

I have Slacko 5.5 installed on a laptop (Packard Bell MH35).
If I push the power button and then suspend it it goes into sleep mode properly, but when I wake it up again it shows me a shell prompt. I can restart xwin from there, but everything I had in it is obviously lost.
I'm using vesa mode, if it helps (because the godawful SiS 671 video chipset doesn't have Linux drivers that actually work).
