I also have this problem and I see you guys suggesting VLC but VLC doesn't seem to be working well.

I just did a clean HDD Puppy instal and instaled VLC through the Puppy interface (really simple stuff) but subtitles just wont display no matter what. I even made a thread here about it.

The Media player that was bundled with Puppy, Gnome MPlayer I think, wont display video.... just sound. Codecs missing maybe?? Tried a few AVI's and MKV and none work on Gnome... I only get sound out of it.

I wish Puppy had a wider array of available software to chose from (like Ubuntu). As is, it's very limited.

Things in my life that make running puppy a breeze.

I guess that opinion is subject to a persons perspective on their surroundings.
Some folks think I live in a desert. I look on it as living in a vast wilderness .
Where you can't find water. I can go swimming.

I used to think that about gnome-mplayer. Then I found out how the preferences worked.

Edit: if I seem a bit cryptic. It is because I am real busy with real world stuff and the only reason I responded was because of email notification. I don't compile stuff any more and what works for me may not necessarily work for you. So sorry if I can't be of more help to you.
