I forget to note bugs :
-Mate Center doesn't work
-Menu, it's not a Puppy XDG menu.
-Can't change theme if you don't remove /~/.gtkrc-2.0
-Some utilities like keyboard.
-Edit the .xinitrc to avoid rox at the startup.

Over.

MATE 1.6.1 desktop

I loaded it into precise 5.5, exited to the prompt and did "startx
mate-session" no quotes.
It's working pretty well so far.

Thanks for your confirmation Biltoo !
Indeed you're right, I forget "startx mate-session" too...
I will work on the menu, and Gvfs for "Computer" and "Trash" support.

I'm looking forward to trying this out, for sure! I think I'll wait until the menu mess is sorted out, though ;)

Once themes are useable, where can I download new ones, and how do I install them? Particularly looking for something orange/black like GTK's DeepThought... yeah, I'm like that :P

For the menu, not really hard, I will replace /etc/xdg/menu/mate-applications by another from the gnome sfs. Just rename "applications.menu" to "mate-applications.menu" and replace.

For themes, take a look to gnome-look.org, download a gtk-2 theme, extract the archive and put the folder in /usr/share/themes or /~/.themes.
Go to appearance settings and appl :). To change an icon theme, do the same operation, but extract the icon theme to /usr/share/icons folder.

Don't hesitate if you have questions :D

Hello, Jejy :D

For the menu you may want to have a look at the latest OpenboxPlus - it has a rewritten menu structure to make it as Puppy-like as possible, and recognizes all Puppy applications, not just those with specific 'Category' names. The OBP files at /usr/share/desktop-directories are set for the menu to display the icons of the current desk icon theme:

Several GTK themes from the latest collections for OpenboxPlus also work with MATE, GNOME and XFCE. The main gtk-theme-collection.pet has some themes that don't support those DE's, you'll see a giant quotation mark if this is the case. The Crunchy and Ambiance-Radiance themes do have support:

Hi vicmz ! :)

Nice idea ! I used your XDG menu for this second build. The result is excellent ! I edited the files in the folder /usr/share/desktop-directories, to use icons theme from /usr/share/icons. It'll work with mate-settings.
Thanks you ! :D

I'll download the SFS shortly, but it won't be until tonight that I can try it -- I've got a busy day ahead.

I installed this pet in my precise 5.5 remaster and then rebooted but mate wouldn't start.
I switched back to jwm and uninstalled the pet and all is good again.
I have a upup raring install (somewhere) so I'll locate that and try again.

EDIT:I tested the pet in my upup raring 387 install and it works fine there.

EDIT:I decided to install mate 1.60 in ubuntu 13.04, I like it :)

FAIL on two counts.

gvfs pet wouldn't install (got a "failed to install" box with a red icon). MATE wouldn't start -- examination of dmesg indicates that it's got the same gmbus issue that GNOME2.32 had.

Indeed I got a crash with Gvfs too.
I'll try to compile it, maybe it will work.

May have figured out the problem. GMBUS is something to do with Intel, not GNOME. Whether or not it works is determined by the driver one uses with Intel hardware.

It appears, from what (little) I understand and can gather (and given the info in that last paragraph), that the gma500 driver (which I'm using) in Puppy -- particularly the Upup series of Puplets -- does not have support for GMBUS and GNOME/MATE happen need that support. There is a patch for the gma500 driver to fix this, and I've asked Pemasu if he can make that happen in his latest Puplet -- Upup Precise 3992.

IF that's the issue, and IF it can be fixed, then that should, reasonably speaking, enable this MATE to work on Poulsbo hardware.

EDIT: I was wrong :( it must be something else...
