Installed to usb.

Excellent work, can't wait to try it out but still stuck with my usual problem i.e: broadcom wl driver.

Maybe peebee or someone might oblige.

I have the multipet but need a delta for the kernel.

Thanks.

Lighthouse 64 602 beta2

#32 Post by Jim1911 »

Hi TazOC,

Working great, including all software tested on my hardware. :D Thanks for separating out the Wine sfs. It's much simpler to use now.

One problem: With 5KDE-4.6.5-x86_64-H.sfs and Gvfs-1.12.3-x86_64-3.sfs loaded, I am still unable to switch to the KDE window manager (WM). When WM tries to start it shows an error: "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 127." Clicking on OK provides the shutdown screen and allows me to switch to another WM. All other WM work fine.

Thanks again for another super distribution, you continue to outdo yourself. :D

If you agree, then, so that the community has your approach documented, it could serve as a guide for all of us in the community. And, when users report, they could be steered to the supporting documentation for guidance. . . .
For me, it's better to include guidance in the release notes. No need to be directed elsewhere. This information in the release notes worked for me:
"For Nvidia press 'N' at the boot menu for the 7th entry or use blacklist=nouveau in Grub
If you experience a blank screen, problems with console or reboot, choose 'For severe video problems - disable KMS, use wizard' at the boot menu, (LiveCD) or add this to the kernel line in your Grub config: nomodeset pfix=vesa, ram"

The only sizable SFS that has not been updated is NLS_KDE-4.6.5.sfs (KDE localization for non-en_US locales.) You can sort the listing by date. Anything dated prior to Mar 30, 2013 is the same as LH64-601. 2 exceptions: Udisks2 and Xfce4 are the same, but I rebuilt them with higher compression (larger blksize) to keep the Mariner ISO under 700MiB.

Enter it on the kernel line. From the LiveCD boot menu, press <tab> (BIOS firmware) or 'e' (UEFI firmware) to edit the menu selection.
noautosave is designed to prevent any automatic save file updates; manual or shutdown (after prompting) only.

open gparted program and right click on the partition where you installed lighthouse; should be SDA1; this will open manage flags menu. select boot as the flag for that partition, run grubfordos again then reboot. should fix your issue.

Grub4Dos is not compatible with UEFI/GPT hardware. I'm thinking about removing it from LH64. Please use the Lighthouse Universal Installer in the Setup menu, which has been updated to detect UEFI/GPT and prepare a USB stick or point to an (advanced) guide for GPT hard drive installation.

Is "GPT hard drive installation" similar to Frugal?

Is Lighthouse Universal Installer the same as PupControl Puppy Universal Installer?

Hi edoc,

Yes and yes. I suspect your hard disk has GPT even though you've installed Windows 7. If so, a button in the new Universal Installer will open something like this in /usr/share/doc/faqs:
http://www.lhpup.org/help/faqs/uefi-harddrive.html

But I highly recommend using the 'Make UEFI Flash drive' button first. That is much easier and should work on any 64-bit computer that can boot from USB flash. (By pressing and holding a specific key like <Esc> or <F8> when the PC first starts to, bring up the 'BBS' BIOS Boot Selection menu.)

Here is some info on GPT disk partition tables:

What is the multipet?

Please try booting without a savefile and enable the proprietary Broadcom driver by using menu -> Setup -> Fatdog64 Service Manager and start the 'BC-wl' service. I can't verify that it works as my WiFi adapters are Realtek and Atheros. If not, please type this in a terminal and post the o/p:

Code: Select all

modprobe lib80211
modprobe cfg80211
insmod /usr/share/broadcom/wl.ko
Thanks,

Mariner working great on a P4 32bit machine with 2.5gb ram, only thing odd is when installing a pet via ppm a password is needed , which is "woofwoof".

The nVidea driverPETinstallation issue is SOLVED

#41 Post by gcmartin »

The nVidea driver issue is SOLVED via a series of steps on the X2 desktop PC.

As it turns out, 3 reboots of the Linux Live media system was required to. both, circumvent the error message and get a successful driver installation.

I will open a thread for future LH64 reference that addresses just this single issue by consolidating the symptoms with a resolution which worked..

LH64 Broadcom connection issue ... SOLVED!

#42 Post by gcmartin »

@TaZoC, thanks!!!!!!!

TRIED YOUR RECOMMENDATION:
  1. Booted the system. selecting the Boot Manager item "... without a savefile"
  2. Once on desktop, Fill-in the FirstRUN with appropriate information then hitting OK
  3. Allowed the system to restart the desktop when asked
  4. On desktop, I opened the Service Manager and selected the wireless driver as follows:
  5. Menu -> Setup -> Fatdog64 Service Manager where on the left pane I double clicked "wl" and on the right pane clicking BOTH Enable and Start buttons.
  6. Exited the Service Manager to desktop,
  7. Back on desktop, I opened the Network taskbar element and selected Frisbee button.
  8. ON Frisbee, I was REQUIRED to click the "Wireless Network Reset" button to see the available networks.
It is now understood that in order to use wireless Broadcom adapter, a corresponding service MUST be started to activate the adapter for the system to make use of it.

Thanks you for your guidance on this.

tazoc:
Sorry for the confusion I hadn't found the Fatdog64 Service Manager which I am familiar with from fatdog.

I'm connected using frisbee and delighted with the result although it looks like I may have a sound problem to sort later.

Some earlier puppies didn't have the wl driver installed as standard and the multipet was developed by some kind forum members (thanks peebee) to get users with the wl driver connected.

Thanks for setting me right.

Creating a LH64 bootable USB stick

#45 Post by tazoc »

edoc wrote:Are you recommending that I actually create a USB boot stick or to just create the UEFI Flash Drive button which serves a Menu purpose without a USB boot stick?
The former, yes get a USB stick that is at least 1 Gig capacity and if it has files on it you need, then copy them elsewhere first. The first button in LH Universal Installer will step you through preparing the stick. No need to format it first. Just note that any contents of the stick will be erased by the installer. It needs to be plugged in to a USB port and not mounted. If not, the installer will let you know.

How does this work?

First it will ask you to navigate to the location of your Lighthouse64-6.02-B2.iso. Either the base or Mariner ISO will work. Then it will 'dd' the ISOhybrid image to the stick, making it bootable. Next the dialog will display a specific command to copy and paste into a terminal that adds another partition to the stick--to use the remaining space for storage. This step will ask which file system you desire to use. I chose Linux ext4, (press 'L' for Linux) but it will offer others also, such as Fat32 or NTFS.

Finally it will help you format the partition with the chosen file system. If this step gives an error message, type sfdisk -R /dev/xxx, where xxx is your USB flash drive, (e.g., sdb, sdc etc.) repeat the format and you're done. (sfdisk -R just asks the kernel to re-read the partition table. The script will give you that command as well, so no need to make note of it.)

Thanks to Jamesbond for writing the script and directions, without which this would have been very difficult!

Lighthouse 64 602 Beta2 with GIMP-2.8.4

I moved my Lighthouse64 install once again, this time to a hp desktop
pc.
I booted with the option that doesn't load x and uninstalled the
proprietary Nvidia driver, then rebooted.
It booted to the prompt and advised doing "xorgwizard-puppy" which I
did, chose probe and the proper screen resolution and it went to the
desktop.

I hit a wall here.

I have an iso-burned DVD in the drive but it does not show up as Lighthouse64*.iso but rather as a bunch of files and folders none of which contain that.

WDYT?

@Edoc, I thnik TaZoC wants you to use the ISO file, itself, rather than the DVD. If you have the ISO file on your HDD, just point the utility to that location and it will extract the files its looking for.

Hope this helps in understanding.

Just time for a quick report, all working well but it was necessary to add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line with my onboard Nvidia graphics. If not, computer freezes with a garbled display.
This problem reared it's ugly head somewhere about k-3.5 and later.

Code: Select all

VGA compatible controller : nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Otherwise looking good so far in brief testing.
