I have a save file....so let's dispense with that as a problem.

Appreciate your suggestions....not being overly technical, a lot of this
is over my head.

Thanks anyway

A couple of new/old little bugs.

1. Trash again: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 099#713099

2. Xlock:
http://linux.die.net/man/1/xlock wrote:-/+grabserver
The grabserver option causes xlock to grab the server. This is not usually needed but some unsecure X servers can be defeated without this.
In case if "our" server is secure enough, would be nice to delete all (2) occurences of "-grabserver" from /usr/local/apps/Xlock/AppRun, because when this parameter exists and a composite manager is in use (Compiz/xcompmgr), xlock won't display screensaver nor password prompt.

@for_wov

There is a lot of permissions problems in the current version because of woof bugs. Maybe the SVN one is related? I didn't test. I can say with confidence that a new test version will be out within 12 hrs with many many bugs fixed. It's a kernel rollback but there are always 2 versions of slacko so with a little patience a newer kernel version will be released too.

@SFR.. in saying "many many bugs fixed".. I'm leaving the trash one for now since it's under discussion

/dev/usb/lpx is now working like it did in previous versions. Hopefully, sszindian and Jim1911 will be able to print with this one.

The menu item System > Grub Legacy Bootloader Config is dead because that program no longer exists. It was removed from Woof in favour of Legacy Grub Config 2013.

Hi Mick,

It's working great with everything tried, including printing, Wine and my favorite Windows software. :D I'll have to try your new f2fs installer.

Thanks,
Jim

The package woof gets still has the old DOTdesktop file, maybe BK put the proper package in his ubuntu repo which slacko doesn't search. Anyway, I fixed it manually. Will be right in the next.

β slacko-5.6 BETA AS IN α β γ δ

#100 Post by Billtoo »

I burned the 5570 iso to a DVD and booted from that.
I used the F2FS installer - flash drives and installed to a 16 gb SDHC
card.
On rebooting and setting up the new system I put the devx and kernel
source sfs in /mnt/home and loaded them with SFS-load (that took a
long time and the free space on the card was reduced by approx 6gb)
I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-319.32.run proprietary driver and
exited to the prompt.
It needed to reboot to get rid of the nouveau driver, back at the
prompt I compiled the proprietary driver (again took a long time) when
it finished I ran xorgwizard and chose the nvidia driver and proper
resolution, (another reboot).
One rebooting it tested x and then prompted me to click on finished,
then it went to the desktop.

PAE version is released

It is named 5.6.71. The kernel was released this morning (my time). I haven't tested it much but it looks like the kernel source is ok.

See main post.

5.6.70

Yes rcrsn51... printer now works but... I had to use hplip-3.11.10's for both printer and scanner. The 12 version from the PPM didn't seem to download correctly, it only downloaded the dependencies, not the hplip's themselves and duped two of those at that? I don't have time to fool with it right now but lets see what others report for a bit!

Hmmm... should have mentioned before but previous version we had print problems with... scanner worked with all versions, 11, 12, 13 but... 12 and 13 do not seem to give good colors on a scan, 11 is beautiful and almost true to color... 12 and 13 were 'brighter colors' than should be, don't lookie so nice :)

??????

I don't know what you are downloading from the PPM. The appropriate HP print/scan drivers for Puppy are here.

This is my second savefile, I tries to compile the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-319.32.run
driver with the first savefile and it was a no go so I started fresh.

I'll attach the error log from the nvidia installer, I think there is
a problem with the kernel source sfs.

Billtoo,

No, by that log it's an nvidia error. Looks like it isn't ready for k3.10x yet.

-------------------------

Anyway, as I do, I'm trying a radical experiment. I'm dd'ing my stick to the SSD of my eee-701SD, see what happens...

I've also noticed there is dramatic differences in speed with different nand media. I have a couple of thise Lexar firefly sticks and they go great. I have a newish imation and that is as slow as treacle. Also, old SDHC class4 cards are a bit too slow.

F2fs also slugs a fair bit of space for itself, around 11%. I'm thinking the best way to make use of it is to have all the read only files (initrd, vmlinuz, main sfs and others) on there own separate partition, either vFAT or ext, and then mount the f2fs partition as a directory for storage. That way we can get the full speed of AUFS and the advantages of f2fs.

It certainly is faster (imho) than a full install of ubuntu or mageia to a stick.

You are dead right about media speeds. I get most consistent results with Sandisk media. Not quite sure where this USB thing is going though. Considering everything, space used, speed, and simplicity, surely ext2 or 3 frugal installs running in pupmode12 makes more sense? It is my understanding that sfs files for things like OpenOffice can't be used with full installs. Have I got that right?

Dave, we'll see where it leads, but I think my last idea is the best. Mount the partition as a layer. I believe it can be done.

Anyhow, the eee experiment is a success, with 1 caveat. F2fs can't be resized, so my 4gig stick partitions have to stay put, so I just made the other 4 gig into another partition. It runs plenty fast so maybe the future of f2fs lies with SSD's.

'nuff about f2fs, it's another toy to play with.

@Billtoo

I was right. It's the nvidia driver. It can be compiled with a patch. I used the latest nvidia beta driver. Works.
